Anti-Bullying Essay Contest

ANTI-BULLYING ESSAY CONTEST

ATHLETES FOR CHARITY and OSI UMENYIORA of the ATLANTA FALCONS are excited to host an essay contest for the students at Bunche Middle School. Osi Umenyiora does not like bullying and needs your help to stop it from happening in schools!

Bullying is a form of aggressive behavior in which someone intentionally and repeatedly causes another person injury or discomfort. Bullying can take the form of physical contact, words or more subtle actions.

The bullied individual typically has trouble defending him or herself and does nothing to “cause” the bullying. Bullying includes actions such as making threats, spreading rumors, attacking someone physically, verbally harassing by teasing or making fun of them, and can also include excluding someone from a group on purpose.

We would like you to write an essay about bullying. Turn in one entry to your teachers by Friday, October 18, 2013 for a chance to win 2 tickets to the 11/10 Falcons v. Seahawks game and other prizes. Only one student will be selected in each category: 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. Winners will be selected by Athletes for Charity based on evaluation of student’s thoughts/opinions, proper grammar and spelling.

INSTRUCTIONS:

·  In an effort to combat bullying in its many forms, it is important to have a full understanding of what bullying means, how it effects everyone that experiences it or witnesses it, and how we can help prevent bullying in the future. Write a 250-500 word essay answering the following questions:

Define bullying (use your own words).

Why do you think people bully others?

Describe the different types/forms of bullying?

What effects do you think bullying has on others? How does it make people who are bullied feel?

How can teachers and principals help address/stop bullying in schools?

Have you ever bullied anyone or experienced being bullied yourself? Please explain.

What can we do to prevent bullying in schools?

·  In the top heading, please include the following information: (1) first and last name, (2) school name, and (3) grade/class.

·  You must submit your drawings to your teachers. DEADLINE is Friday, October 18, 2013.
