Planetarium Internships

The Imiloa Astronomy Center of Hawaii Planetarium is pleased to provide internship opportunities for UH-Hilo Physics and Astronomy Students. Up to two interns per semester may participate in this program. Planetarium internships are considered a “for credit” class at UHH. These count as electives towards a major in Astronomy or Physics. Goals of Internship:

1)  Basic planetarium operations – students will receive training and develop proficiency to present public and school planetarium programs using a variety of digital presentation technologies. They will learn start-up and shut down of the planetarium projection systems and general maintenance of systems.

2)  Sky Lectures – Perform sky lectures using planetarium systems, identifying current stars, constellations, planets, and other visible phenomena

3)  Scripting/Programming of planetarium systems – become proficient in creating basic planetarium scripts for use in sky shows, public programs, and school shows

4)  Assist with UH-Hilo Astronomy Classes which take place at the planetarium – works with UHH astronomy faculty on using the planetarium in class presentations

5)  Public outreach – becomes proficient in astronomy outreach using planetarium and other presentations

Supervised by: UHH astronomy faculty and Imiloa Planetarium Manager

Measurable/Gradable outcomes:

1)  Two seasonal sky lectures presented to, and evaluated by supervising team

2)  Performs regular public programs proficiently

3)  Develops and presents one (30-45 minute) astronomy outreach activity for use outside of the planetarium (at UHH, a local school, Imiloa Astronomy Center of Hawaii, or another venue).

4)  Able to demonstrate basic planetarium operations to Planetarium Manager
