CLASS TITLE:WORKERS' COMPENSATION REHABILITATION NURSE

ALLOCATION FACTOR(S)

This is work providing direct rehabilitation nursing services to occupationally-injured workers covered by the Florida Workers' Compensation Law.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

  • Conducts home visits in order to obtain a more realistic view of the patient's surroundings through an analysis of the socioeconomic background, medical needs, and other problems which have a direct bearing on the monetary needs of the family involved.
  • Works with insurance carriers, doctors, etc., in order to facilitate the total rehabilitation of injured workers by coordinating physical rehabilitation with vocational rehabilitation.
  • Interviews occupationally-injured workers and assists them in becoming totally rehabilitated and returning to gainful employment.
  • Monitors services provided by individual private rehabilitation services.
  • Performs nursing duties of an instructional nature, such as helping to plan diets, placing medical orders, instructing the patient in the use of equipment needed for rehabilitation, and instructing the patient in caring for the injury.
  • Serves as liaison between medical professionals, state agencies, attorneys, insurance carriers, self-insurers, and the patient.
  • Interprets medical information as it pertains to physical limitations and capacities and how it relates to compensation.
  • Visits surgical supply companies and selects equipment ordered by the doctor for severely disabled claimants.
  • Explains clients' rights and responsibilities under the Workers' Compensation Law.
  • Testifies and recommends to the deputy commissioners whether payments for settlements should be in the form of a lump sum or if continuation of biweekly or wage loss payments are in clients' best interest.
  • Contacts community service agencies to request additional services to supplement those received through workers' compensation.
  • Completes individualized written rehabilitative plans for claimants.
  • Writes comprehensive narrative rehabilitation reports on the progression from one stage of rehabilitation to another.
  • Attends and participates in rehabilitation hospital conferences regarding injured individuals.
  • Performs related work as required.

  • Knowledge of nursing principles, practices, and techniques.
  • Knowledge of human anatomy and physiology.

  • Ability to assess patients' needs and prepare rehabilitation plans.
  • Ability to work with patients having a variety of physical problems.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse in accordance with Florida Statute 464 or eligible to practice nursing in accordance with Florida Administrative Code 210-8.27 and three years of professional nursing experience.
  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in nursing can substitute for one year of the required experience.
  • A master's degree from an accredited college or university in nursing, health or public administration, or business can substitute for two years of the required experience.
