2017/2018Syllabus forAgriculture Class - Mr. Tafoya

In this class students will explore the foundations and basics of agriculture through the Agriscience: Fundamentals and Applications text. Students will get hands on instruction in the areas of plant science, animal science, mechanics, and leadership development. You will participate in class work as well as lab work in the field including the school pond, greenhouse,garden and field trips. Students will also learn basic practical shop skills used in the various areas of the agriculture industry.

Basics

Treat the teacher and your peers with respect and you will have an excellent learning experience. Remember to follow directions-we are here to learn and achieve.

Our course objectives are:To give students a better understanding of the agriculture industry.

To identify the many roles agriculture plays in our daily lives.

To determine how agriculture affects the way we live.

Rules

You must treat everyone with RESPECT. No fighting, cursing, or taking of private property. This entails touching people or their things. Any defacing of school property (such as writing on the desks, books, boards, garden, pond etc.) will result in detention and extra duty. All rules in the student handbook will be followed. Remember it is your responsibility to be on time and ready to learn. You will be allowed 2 extra minutes after the tardy bell to get here from the main campus. First hour will not get 2 extra minutes. After that time the door will be closed and locked. You will also be released 2 minutes early to get to your next class on time.

Grades

Grades will be earned through 1. classwork, 2. Supervised Agriculture Experience (SAE), 3. FFA and classroom participation. Each week students in class will earn participation points. Oral and group participation in class is essential. Every 9 week grading period each student is expected to participate in at least one FFA event. Students will also have at least one SAE project. FFA activities and SAE projects could incur costs to the student.FFA and SAE are out of class activities and require out of class time and effort.

Technology use

Mr. Tafoya will strive to use the latest technology available to meet the course objectives and standards, mimicking the workplace in the agriculture industry. Computers, phones, and other electronic devices will NOT be used in class. Students will be allowed to use these devicesfor class purposesONLY at the required time and place. Any abuse of this privilege will result in disciplinary action according to the student handbook.

Agriculture program expectations:

  1. Show respect to everyone in the classroom.
  2. Come to class prepared to learn (notebooks/pens).
  3. Follow all the rules in the student handbook (andyou must have it to leave the classroom).
  4. No roughhousing or horseplay in the classroom or field.
  5. No food or drink permitted in the classroom. (*Except as explained in the WHS handbook)
  6. All students are expected to participate in the FFA. This requires out of class time to complete.
  7. All students must have a Supervised Agricultural Experience. This requires out of class time to complete.
  8. Students will be expected to repair or replace any realia used for SAE projects that is lost or damaged due to abuse or neglect.

Your first assignment in this class will be to return this filled in form back by August 7th.
