Electronics and Technology Policy

Mr. Phelan

2015-2016

Due to the overwhelming prevalence of students being distracted from learning by their various forms of technology, my classroom policy for electronics is tied directly to the Class Participation grade. In addition to a regular participation grade, students will also receive a daily participation grade for placing technology out of their reach for the duration of each class. Since electronics have NEVER been allowed in class, it is wise to see this policy as a gift that gives students extra points for doing something they should already be doing.

The policy will begin next class and work as such:

  • Each student and his/her parent/guardian must sign the bottom portion of this sheet stating that he/she understands the policy. This counts as a participation grade.
  • Each student will receive a number which corresponds to a numbered pocket on the organizer.
  • Each student should place his/her phone and/or iPod in his/her numbered pocket at the beginning of class.
  • Electronics must remain in the pocket for the duration of the class to receive points.
  • Any student caught using electronics during class will receive an after school detention, for the next school day afternoon (excluding Monday). Detention will take place from 2:40 to 3:10 pm.
  • Failure to comply with the requirements will result in further disciplinary action.

Daily participation points will work as such:

5 points for filled pocket.

0 points for unfilled pocket.*

0 points PLUS detention for any student who neglects to stow his/her technology and is caught using it/them in class.

0 points PLUS detentionfor any student who puts one type of technology in pocket and is caught using another type during class.

*Any student claiming to have “no technology…no phone, no MP3 player, etc.” must provide a note from his/her parents stating such. Students with said notes will receive 5 points per day, as other students do. However, if such a student is caught with electronics, the resulting punishment will be a formal write up, not a teacher detention.

I understand the Policy for Electronics & Technology policy that has been laid out above. My signature below indicates that I am aware of the expectations of and repercussions regarding the rules.
