Syllabus

Class description: This semester long class is designed to provide the seventh/eighth grade students with practical information about drafting, hand and power tools, project planning, wood, and metal working. Students will learn basic drafting and lettering principles and how to apply them to develop small projects. Students will learn how to work safely and accurately with hand tools and a few power tools. The class is an introductory course designed to get students interested in the different fields of technology and allow them insight into the different courses we offer here at Ste. Genevieve. Students design and build small wood projects and develop a pattern to a project from a sheet of metal. Students must pass safety tests before starting any project construction.

Measureable Student Learning Outcomes: Upon completing this course, students should be able to do the following:

  1. Demonstrate the understanding and importance of working in a team or group.
  2. Demonstrate the correct procedures of working safely in a lab.
  3. Demonstrate proper drafting skills.
  4. Demonstrate good communication skills.
  5. Demonstrate the ability to follow precise instructions and procedures and complete work in time allotted.
  6. Demonstrate good note taking/record keeping skills.
  7. Demonstrate an understanding of how to apply the above to every day life.

Course Requirements: Students are expected to follow all posted classroom rules at all times. If a rule is broken then the student should expect a consequence. NO FOOD OR DRINK IN CLASSROOM, INCLUDING GUM. Unless given by instructor. Exception is bottled water.

Course format: In this semester long class, the lessons will be divided up evenly with a strong emphasis on drafting, safety in the shop, proper use of tools and machines; then use this knowledge to complete a wood project and a metal project.

Course Goals:

The goals of this course are:

  1. To enhance your ability and willingness to use critical thinking skills to construct new and interesting methods.
  2. Introduce to know the proper techniques for using different hand tools, machines, and drafting techniques.
  3. To understand the importance of the industrial field in everyday life and the impact you can have on this world.
  4. To encourage you to work in groups to accomplish and complete goals.
  5. To get a hands on learning approach with projects and assignments.

Grades:

Everyday bell ringers: 5 pts

Class participation: 10 pts

Homework/in class work: 20-50 pts

Projects 100 pts

Safety test: 20-100 pts

Late work: Late work will be accepted up to the end of the week that the assignment was originally scheduled to be due, for a maximum of 50 percent. Example: If an assignment was due on a Wednesday for 20 points, the maximum you can get if you turn it in on Friday and get all questions/problems right would be 10 points.

Make up procedure: A folder in the front of the room will have the assignments that you missed. You are required to finish the assignment(s) and turn them into you class’s folder also in the front of the room by Friday of the week you return.
