CANVASS AND CERTIFICATION – 2005 Municipal General Election Results
The City Recorder recommends that the City Council complete the canvass and, by motion, certify the 2005 Municipal General Election results.
Pursuant to State law, it is necessary for the City Council, as the Board of Canvassers, to canvass the election no later than ten days after the completion of the Municipal General Election. After the canvassing has been completed, it will be necessary for the Council, by motion, to officially certify the results of the canvass.
Donna Weaver, City Recorder, reviewed election night proceedings and results, and then reviewed the provisional and absentee ballots as of November 15, 2005.
Mr. Forsyth moved that the City Council:
1. Verify the results of the election by ratifying the results of the precanvass.
2. Ratify the addition of the provisional and absent-voter ballots, which were counted on November15, 2005, to the Election Summary as District #35.
3. Certify the election results with the following changes:
a. Correct the number of Total Voted on the City of Orem Voting Districts Summary form to include the provisional ballots and absent-voter ballots to 9,268.
b. Change the Total Votes on the Orem General Election 2005 printout to include the votes from the provisional and absent-voter ballots as follows:
Jerry C. Washburn from 7,098 to 7,176 votes
David E. Workman from 1,736 to 1,763 votes
Karen McCandless from 6,072 to 6,142 votes
Shiree A. Thurston from 4,509 to 4,569 votes
Dean Dickerson from 3,958 to 4,005 votes
Zachary T. Napierski from 3,796 to 3,846 votes
Kelvin Clayton from 3,285 to 3,298 votes
Daryl Berlin from 2,481 to 2,516 votes
Cultural Arts & Recreation Tax Ballot Question Yes from 5,016 to 5,081
Cultural Arts & Recreation Tax Ballot Question No from 3,661 to 3,699
4. Declare 4-year term Mayoral candidate Jerry C. Washburn and City Council candidates Karen McCandless, Shiree A. Thurston, and Dean Dickerson to be elected.
5. Declare the Cultural Arts & Recreation Ballot Question to be approved.
Mr. Campbell seconded the motion. Those voting aye: Mr. Campbell, Mr. Dickerson, Mr. Forsyth, Mrs. McCandless, Mrs. Thurston, and Mayor Washburn. The motion passed unanimously.
CITY MANAGER INFORMATION ITEMS
Mr. Reams requested the Council come up with a date for a City Council Retreat. The Council agreed to hold it on December 9, 2005.
Mayor Washburn questioned where the retreat would be held. Mr. Reams responded that they were planning to go to The Homestead in Midway.
Mr. Campbell expressed that he would rather stay local.
Mr. Forsyth advised that he has a board meeting at 5:00 p.m. that night. He explained that he could go to Midway as long as he was back in time for his other meeting.
Mr. Reams stated that he would come up with other alternatives of where to hold the retreat, and the Council could decide at the next City Council meeting.
Mr. Reams then presented the City Council with a book compiled by the Orem Public Library staff in reference to the artwork owned by the City of Orem.
ADJOURNMENT OF MEETING
Mrs. McCandless moved to adjourn the meeting. Mr. Forsyth seconded the motion. Those voting aye: Mr. Campbell, Mr. Dickerson, Mr. Forsyth, Mrs. McCandless, Mrs. Thurston, and Mayor Washburn. The motion passed unanimously.
