Here are some Mentoring/CIC updates presented in a Q and A format.

FYI – On Wednesday, Aug. 13th, the webpage ( where CIC documents are housed was down. The problem has been resolved.

On Aug. 27th you will find CIC documents at Click on PD Departments>STEP>Mentors. Scroll down to CIC area below the calendar. Visit the new website for everything New Teacher/Mentor/Career Pathways information.

When will CIC’s have access to MAS? / You will know when you have access to MAS by the arrival of an email from MAS informing you that you are the CIC. Please note, at this time the auto-generated email has outdated 2013-14 information and contradicts the information you received at the training. I apologize for any confusion. Unfortunately I do not have immediate direct access to update the auto-generated emails.
What are the requirements to be a mentor? / Teachers should meet the following minimum state requirement to be mentors:
  • Have a minimum of three years teaching experience (i.e. going into their fourth year of teaching this year)
  • Have a superior record of assisting students in achieving improvement in student performance (Appraisal rating of 3 or 4),
Also, in accordance with the TEC, §21.458, the teacher must, to the extent practicable:
  • teach in the same school; and
  • teach the same subject or grade level, as applicable.

Which new hires are eligible to have a campus-based mentor? / The following new hires are eligible to have a campus-based mentor:
  • Beginning teacher (0 teaching experience as teacher of record)
  • International teachers new to the district in 2014-2015
  • Beginning teachers hired in Spring 2014

How do I communicate mentor/mentee relationships to the Mentor Program Office / 1)The week of Aug. 18th, principals will receive a list of eligible mentors that meet the above criteria.
2)Anelectronic submission form will need to be completed to report each mentor/mentee relationship. Correct ID numbers are critical. If ID numbers are incorrect the mentor will not receive important information.
How do I add mentor/mentee relationships into MAS? / In addition to completing the electronic submission form mentioned above, names will need to be entered into MAS. Directions for adding names into MAS are attached. Note – It is possible that the name of your new teacher may not yet appear on the MAS campus roster. Wait a couple of days and try again. Beginning teachers must first be entered in PeopleSoft by HR before it will appear in MAS.
What trainings do mentors need to attend and what are the deadlines? / Mentor training is differentiated for mentors that have been HISD mentors during the past 3 years vs. new mentors. Please see attached training document for details and share document with your mentors.
When will mentor trainings be available? / Online courses are scheduled to be available on Aug. 20, 2014 and are available 24/7. Internet Explorer is the recommended browser to use when accessing these courses. The face to face course for new mentors is Saturday, Sept. 27 with Rick Smith. Please ask new HISD mentors to save the date. eTRAIN course number forthcoming.
How do I enroll/access the online courses? / Self-registration directions given to you during CIC training and also attached.
Are mentor trainings on eTRAIN / Online courses do not require an eTRAIN course number. Mentors should follow the self-registration directions given to you during CIC training and also attached.
What is the mentor stipend amount? / $600 per beginning teacher supported (maximum of two)
Can a mentor have more than 1 BT? / Yes, but remember mentoring is time consuming therefore not recommended.
