Christian Church

(Disciples of Christ)

History:

The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) was founded in the early 1800’s in the United States. The founders envisioned only one Christian Church, modeled on the New Testament, to be a witness for both religious freedom and the unity of all Christians. The church grew rapidly across the American frontier, in part because it shared many values of the early settlers. The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) now includes nearly 4,000 congregations.

"A Movement for Wholeness in a Fragmented World"

This is our basic plea. We strive for unity of all believers in Jesus Christ and Christian love and cooperation among all churches. We are “Christians only—but not the only Christians.”

History of the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Burnet:

In June 1883, land was purchased and the first building was erected in 1884 or 1885. In 1910, the building burned and eventually the church disbanded. The congregation reorganized in 1950, purchased the present lot in 1951 and dedicated the sanctuary (now the fellowship hall) on July 27, 1952. Sunday School rooms were added in 1957 and the present sanctuary was dedicated December 14, 1975. An extensive remodel was undertaken in 2005.

We, As Disciples, believe:

† Jesus Christ is the Son of the Living

God, and offers saving grace to all.

†All individuals are God’s children.

We also believe in:

† Open Communion

The Lord’s Supper, or Communion,

is celebrated in weekly worship and

is open to all believers.

† Diversity of Opinion

Each person is free to determine

individual beliefs, guided by Scripture,

the Holy Spirit, study and prayer.

† Believers Baptism by Immersion

In baptism, the old self-centered life is

set aside and a new life of trust in God

through Jesus Christ is made possible.

† Importance of Church Unity

All Christians should cooperate in ministry wherever possible, affirming

each other as sisters and brothers in

Christ.

†The Ministry of All Believers

Both clergy and lay individuals (male and female) lead worship, direct

service opportunities and nurture

spiritual growth.

†Freedom of Belief

Disciples are called together around

one essential of faith: belief in Jesus

Christ as Lord and Savior.

Spiritual Growth:

First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) meets weekly to worship God. In the holiness of God’s presence and with the support of others, we grow in our understanding of God and commitment to God in ways that make a difference in our everyday lives.

Through worship we discover the joy of trusting and following Jesus.

We offer Sunday School classes, youth activities and Bible studies to enhance our spiritual growth.

Caring Relationships:

Our congregation is well known for the caring relationships of its members and with the community. Relationships are nurtured by including members in “Care Groups” made up of all ages. Care Groups increase the interaction among church members, provide a support system for church members and friends of the church, and help new members and visitors be, and feel, included.

Opportunities to Serve:

We believe that, as Christians, we are called to serve as Jesus served. “Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.” (1Corinthians 12:4-7, NRSV) At First Christian (Disciples of Christ)in Burnet, there are many opportunities to serve God by serving others through the ministries of (continued)
