CHESHI RE SQUANDER HARD EARNED ADV ANT AGE

Having been ahead on points for most of the match, J W Lees Cheshire County team had a disappointing third day to lose their vital Championship match against Devon by 3 wickets. They needed to win to give themselves a chance of retaining the Western Division Championship. It was not to be.

On the first day, they won the toss and elected to bat on what turned out to be a very bowler-friendly wicket. In real trouble at 77 for 5, the experienced Simon Renshaw joined debutant Naseef Din (Sale) and together they enabled Cheshire to reach a substantial 251 for 8 in their 100 overs. Renshaw scored 63, but the innings of the day was played by Din who batted with great poise only to fall 4 short of what would have been a marvellous debut century. At the close of play, Cheshire's score looked even better as Charlie Lamb (Bramhall) took three early wickets, leaving Devon in trouble at 38 for 3.

Lamb, 5 for 65, and Renshaw 4 for 49, pushed home Cheshire's advantage on the second day, bowling Devon out for 159, giving Cheshire a very useful 92 run advantage.

They started their second innings well enough reaching 30 without loss, but then things went badly wrong. Peter Roebuck, the experienced ex-Somerset captain, organised his bowlers and field settings so well that he stifled Cheshire's efforts to dominate and wickets started to fall. 30 for 0 became 35 for 4, with Naseef Din, yesterday's hero, being adjudged LBW first ball. Worse was to come. Andy Hall (Bramhall) had chipped a bone in his left hand taking a catch and was in agony trying to bat. He soon went, not being able to stop a fast yorker. Renshaw and Simon Marshall (Neston) tried to get the innings moving, but Roebuck denied them and Cheshire's lack-lustre innings closed for a measly 93 leaving Devon needing 186 to win. Cheshire was still in with a chance.

This time neither Lamb, nor Renshaw could get it right. Devon got off to a flyer, and although Barney Cutbill (Macclesfield) took 4 for 34 and bowled exceptionally well, it was just not enough. Devon made it by 3 wickets and left Cheshire to reflect on a good opportunity squandered.
