Chemistry CP Syllabus

Shields - Spring 2014

Chemistry I is a weighted honors/advanced degree course and requires students to read all text material, complete all assignments, labs and projects on time, attend class, and fully participate. All students must have completed biology I and algebra I with a C or better. Grading

The two quarter grades will be averaged for the final semester grade. The midterm and final exams are 20% of your quarter grade, class average is 80%. Class grades are weighted: tests (60%), activities/labs (25%), notebook (20%), and daily grade (5%). Activities include labs, projects, hands-on work, etc. Notebook includes all assignments, handouts, notes, quizzes. The daily grade comes from your presence and participation each day; this grade cannot be made up.

Make-up work

All missed work/test will receive a zero. If the missed work/test is due to an unexcused absence, the zero will remain. With an excused absence, you have 3 days to complete missed work/tests. IT IS THE STUDENT'S RESPONSIBILITY TO ARRANGE MAKE-UP WORK/TEST WITH THE TEACHER. There are no makeup labs; a research paper will be assigned on the lab’s topics and objectives in addition to the prelab write-up. There is no help session after school. You can send me an email at I will check the address 6-7 pm each night as possible to answer questions.

Website

Students will be required to print assignments from my website under the school faculty section at

Attendance and Tardies

Tardies: Students are expected to be on time for class. Tardies will be recorded and the school policy enforced. (4 tardies = 1 unexcused absence)

Attendance: It is the student’s responsibilityto place admit slips on my desk at the beginning of class and pick-up signed slip before the end of class. There are 4 excused and 4 unexcused absences allowed before credit may be lost for the semester.

Class Policies: No student has the right to prevent me from teaching, or other students from learning. To this end, read the following expectations very carefully.

1. Conduct yourself with common courtesy. Behavior that is unacceptable at home is unacceptable in my classroom.

2. Notebook, pencil and text must be with you every day.

3. Passes are not allowed. Take care of personal needs between classes.

4. No food or gum is allowed in the classroom/lab. You may bring a clear, capped bottle of water (except on lab days) which must sit on the floor, and be disposed of properly. Any infraction will result in a policy reversal.

5. Failure to complete assignments or activities, pass assessments, or become disruptive in class will result in parental contact and/or conference.

6. No electronic devices at all in the classroom with the exception of calculators. If any device is being used there will be a conference with parents and a class "B" offense discipline referral made to school administration.

7. Any safety rule or policy broken during lab will result in immediate removal until a parental and/or administrative conference is held.

8. ALWAYS BE IN PROPER UNIFORM.

9. All school policies will be enforced.

Consequences if you refuse to follow these policies and rules:

One Verbal warning and Parental contact

Administrative referral for retract/suspension/expulsion
