Due to population growth in Sohag governorate and in Al-Tawael area east of Sohag city, and the need to improve the living condition of the Egyptian community, Sohag Company for Water and Wastewater try to find an alternative water resources which are high and enough quantity with low cost. Although there are water treatment plants and groundwater wells serve this area, there are many problems in this water specially in groundwater such as ( high percentage of TDS , Mn, Fe, Hardness, Bacteriological counts). Sohag governorate located in the middle part of the nile valley, Lat. 26° 15' 00" and 26° 45' 00"N and Long. 31° 15' 00" and 31 45' 00" E. The study area located East of sohag city, Lat. 26° 38' 30" N and Long. 31° 40' 30" . The total population of Sohag governorate is about 4.600.000 persons and the studied area is about 100,000 persons and the beneficiary area of this study is about 50,000 persons. The hydrogeochemical characteristics of the groundwater in the studied area are evaluated through the chemical analysis of several water samples collected from the existing wells around and in the studied area. The groundwater in the area is of slightly alkaline nature. The TDS values are ranging between (550 ppm to 890 ppm), Mn between (0.4ppm to 0.8 ppm), Fe between (0.2 ppm to 0.4 ppm), hardness between (300 ppm to 450 ppm), microbiological samples are in the trend to be not comply results. Tow units of Riverbank Filtration were drilled in the Al-Tawael treatment plant with 30 meter depth, 20 inches diameter and capacity 30 L/Sec. for each of total capacity 60 L/Sec. Water quality of these units was chemically, bacteriologically and biologically analyzed in the central lab of the company and the reference lab of the holding company (ISO 17025). Results of water samples show that there are water with high quality (low percentages of TDS is ranging from 250 ppm to 300 ppm, Mn ranging from (0.2 ppm to 0.5 ppm ), low percentage of Fe, Bacterial and Algal count and Turbidity 0.5 NTU. Total cost of the two units ready to pump into the water net is about 400.000 Egyptian pound, however, the total cost in case of constructing a new (WTP) of the same capacity 60 L/Sec is about 10 million Egyptian pound.
