Go to the headings in your document. Highlight the heading text, select the “Home” tab, right click on the “Heading 1” style. Select “Update Heading 1 to Match Selection”
Highlight the titles of your subheadings, select the “Home” tab, and right click on the “Heading 2” style. Select “Update Heading 2 to Match Selection”. This process can be done again with Heading 3 if you have another level of subheadings.
Once your headings have been formatted, go to the top of the Table of Contents. Select the “Update Table of Contents” button. A dialog box will appear. Select “Update entire table” to add new headings or delete headings. Select “Update page numbers only” if your headings are already in place and only page numbers need to be updated.
Remember, the TOC should not include bold, italicized or underlined text. Some of the headings within your dissertation may be bold. The method above may add the bold text to your TOC. Once all TOC entries have been added, highlight all text in the TOC and unbold the text in the TOC.
