Press Release

(Boston, MA) Monday, November 14, 2011 – BACE, Boston Advocates for Catholic Education partof the University of Notre Dame's Alliance for Catholic Education (ACE), partnered with the Catholic Schools Foundation, Inc (CSF) to host an Essay Night at Cristo Rey Boston High School. This event was held to assist college bound seniors with their college essays. Cristo Rey staff was also present to assist with the actual applications as well as additional essay support.

The volunteers spent time reviewing the student essays and then discussing revisions with the student.

“I am so glad I went, the help was really great. Sarah’s stories are so inspirational and her advice was magnificent!” – Charlotte Ferdinand, Class of 2012. “The encouragement and helpful ideas were awesome. I really learned a lot. Dean’s advice almost made me change my major.” – Junibell Williams, Class of 2012

Elizabeth Stowe Fennell, a BACE member, approached CSF with the idea. She and her volunteers have worked with High Schools in the past and found this type of event beneficial to all. “Although the students expected to learn something from the BACE members, the volunteers learned so much from the students and their stories, which they shared through their essays. Colleges and universities will be lucky to have these students on their campuses.”

Maria Theodorakakis, College Counselor, was very enthusiastic about the prospect of having BACE volunteers hold this event at Cristo Rey. “We are extremely grateful to have had such talented members of the community reach out to our school. College essays serve as an opportunity for our students to share their exceptional stories, and the guidance they received from these volunteers was hugely beneficial. We cannot thank you enough for your time and support.”
