Position Title:Adoption Counselor

Job Relationship:Adoption/Intake Lead

Classification:Part Time

Primary Objective:To assist customers in selecting the appropriate pet to adopt and provide education information to customers either adopting or surrendering pets. To provide physical and emotional care to all shelter pets.

Job Responsibilities:

  1. Interacts with customers interested in adopting pets and assists them in selecting a pet appropriate to their lifestyle and needs. Also provides educational information on pet care and shelter policies. Making themselves available on the adoption floor in the animal areas.
  2. Interacts with customers who are surrendering pets and provides educational information on spay/neuter issues.
  3. Completes data entry procedures, answers telephone, handles monetary transactions, and provides information to customers on CCHS activities if greeter/receptionist is unavailable.
  4. Keeps all animal areas clean and sanitary, including but not limited to: cages, kennels and surrounding facilities (floors, walls, etc.) Scooping litter and kennels when animals have feces in their areas at any time.
  5. Provides food and water to shelter animals as appropriate. Ensuring nightly re-checks are done and food/water re-fills being done. Medicating when necessary.
  6. Washes/grooms animals as needed or assigned.
  7. Daily provides physical attention and emotional support to all shelter animals (i.e. petting, playing, talking, grooming) Utilizing current obedience techniques to increase adoptability.
  8. Reports any illness or temperament problems to a shelter supervisor. Reports any animal needing vaccines to a technician or shelter supervisor.
  9. Reports any problems with facilities or equipment to a shelter supervisor or office manager.
  10. Does laundry and other housekeeping tasks as needed or assigned.
  11. Performs other related duties as required.

Skills, Abilities and Qualifications:

  1. Proficient in basic computer applications, such as word processing, spreadsheets, and

internetusage.

  1. Record keeping skills and ability to handle money.
  2. Organization and planning skills.
  3. Possess demonstrated excellent customer service skills

  9. Experience in caring for companion animals
  10. Possess a High School Diploma or GED or have relevant job-related experience.
  11. Must be available for special events and training.
  12. Must possess NYS Driver’s License.
  13. Physical condition commensurate with responsibilities of the job.
