Conference Theme: Mindfulness and Communication

Difficult times call for difficult conversations. Rising cultural and ideological tensions that have come to dominate daily consciousness across the world, demand a necessary reconciliation of self and collective action. Our intersectional experiences, responses and challenges not only bring us together in collectivity, but also set us apart from each other. In this turbulent moment of our shared history, WSCA’s conference theme for 2018 “Mindfulness and Communication” urges us to consider the ways in which we reflect, listen, and respond to each other and our communities in a volatile global landscape.

The Intercultural Communication Interest Group (ICIG) asks its members to consider how intercultural communication scholarship can serve as a prism through which we may interrogate the practice of mindfulness; not simply as personal reflection, but as a seed for activist, pedagogical and critical action. In response to the conference theme, the ICIG invites scholars to consider how mindfulness shapes (or even limits)intercultural praxis, especially in multicultural and transnational ethnoscapes. We encourage submission of papers, panels, roundtables, performative responses and other unique formats that critically respond to issues around mindfulness and communication, including but not limited to:

  • Deconstructing “mindfulness;” what constitutes mindfulness in the context of intercultural communication?
  • Convergences and divergences of mindful communication in the classroom, on the streets, and on the page.
  • Self-care as resistive praxis for activists, critical scholars, and pedagogues
  • The relationship between “civility” and “mindfulness”
  • When do disciplining mechanisms of the state appropriate mindfulness?
  • The limits of mindfulness; when is mindfulness a retreat from engagement and action?
  • Intersections of memory and mindfulness
  • Intersections of religion, spirituality, and activism
  • Decolonizing mindfulness– decentering Western understandings of praxis
  • Problematizing the framing of mindfulness outside Buddhism – thinking through cultural appropriation
  • Histories of mindfulness as active resistance to racist/caste ideology in non-western contexts
  • The affective terrain of mindfulness; locating anger and grief
  • Queer survival; strategies, practices, and burdens
  • Frictions of class-based understandings of mindfulness

ICIG especially invites submissions from teachers, scholars, and practitioners who examine work within international contexts and topics that challenge Western constructs and performances of race, gender, queerness, and other identity markers in various environments. ICIG also supports co-sponsored programs with other interest groups that consider the conference theme.

The deadline for submission is September 1, 2017. Please send competitive papers and program proposals electronically to:
