Video of the Week – SLS 3D printing of iglidur components
In this week’s video of the week, motion plastics expert igus demonstrates how 3D parts are printed using the selective laser sintering (SLS) process. Using iglidur I3-PL tribo-powder, a new polymer material developed specifically for laser sintering, plain bearings are at least three times more wear resistant than those printed from standard materials.
Selective laser sintering produces a 3D part with better precision, compared to parts printed using the FDM (Fused Deposition Modelling) technique. Another advantage is that the parts can achieve a much higher strength due to the process in the SLS method.
An additional benefit of using the SLS process is that no support structures are required; this is because the loose powder, which is not melted by the laser, acts as the supporting material. Thus less finishing work is required on the components and the parts can be used directly, once the excess powder is removed.
Individual 3D parts can be designed, and then configured online and printed via the igus online ordering and printing service. Depending on part complexity, delivery can be in as little as 24 hours from time of ordering. For further information about the online 3D printing service, please visit:
