DVISORY SERVICE

Language advisors are available in the LANGUAGE RESOURCES CENTRE (LRC), Room 2155, Avenue Campus to give help and advice on language learning, from late afternoon until 19.00 on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdaysand Thursdays during term-time. There is an additional language advisory service for international students at 15.00-19.00 on Wednesdays. Advisors are also available to give advice on academic skills. The Language Resources area, Ground Floor, in Hartley Library provides details of academic English support classes and individual tutorials for overseas students and English language advisors are also available there.

AUDIO CASSETTES AND CDs

There is a large collection of off-air audio recordings and course tapes in the MULTIMEDIA SUITE (Room 2153). These cover all languages taught in Modern Languages (English, French, German, Italian, Latin, Portuguese, Spanish) and many non-taught languages such as Chinese, Arabic or Japanese. Audio cassette catalogues stored above the audio cabinets indicate related materials. Audio CDs can be obtained from the Reception Desk. Classwork materials are to be found in the class files at the entrance to the LRC. Listen to tapes/CDs in several locations throughtout the Language Resources Centre.Increasingly sound recordings will be produced digitally and available on the Language Resources Centre website.

AVENUE LIBRARY

The Avenue Library is open week days during term-time from 9.00-19.25, Fridays 9.00-17.55, Saturdays10.00-12.55, and Sundays 13.00-16.55. It holds a large number of foreign language video/DVD films, and language reference materials. Studying and viewing facilities are available. You can also make photocopies here.

OOKS

Course and reference books can be found in individual language areas on marked shelves in the LRC, ENGLISH, FRENCH, GERMAN and SPLAS RESOURCES ROOMS. Many indicate LANGUAGE LEVELS (these relate to Modern Language Stages) and availability of accompanying audio and/or video materials.

CATALOGUES

Printed book, audio and video catalogues are available in the LRC (and on the Library WEBCAT). Find them next to the relevant resources.

CD ROM

Many of our computer-based resources are available from our virtual CD server. Access to these materials is available from a number of PCs in the LRC, the resources rooms, the Hartley Library and SouthamptonGeneralHospital. These include electronic newspapers, dedicated language learning software, dictionaries and encyclopaedias.

CENTRE FOR LANGUAGE STUDY (CLS)

CLS, an academic section of Modern Languages, coordinates the University’s language teaching and provides learning resources andfacilities.The office is situated on Upper Level 2 of the Avenue Campus (Room2191)

COLOURS

A colour code system is used throughout the LRC. You will find that the most commonly taught languages are identified by colours, e.g.white for English, green for German, yellow for French, orange for Spanish, lilac for Italianand dark blue for Portuguese. Within topic boxes blue cardsare for information, white for exercises, yellow for answer keys. Coloured dots also indicate LANGUAGE LEVEL on many course books. See notices on shelves for details of level (these relate to the Southampton language stages).

COMENIUS CENTRE

Supported by CILT (the National Centre for Languages), the Comenius Centre holds a selection of language resources for learners and teachers. It is situated on the Upper Level 2, Room 2165 at the Avenue Campus.

COMPUTERS

Computer-based resources in the LRC and resources rooms include: dedicated software; DICTIONARIES; SATELLITE/DIGITAL RADIO and TELEVISION; encyclopaedias; NEWSPAPERS; GRAMMAR reference and practice; conversational dialogues; INTERNET access.

ICTIONARIES

A range of dictionaries is available on reference shelves in the LRC. The Hartley Library, the Avenue Library, the WSA Library and the main library at SouthamptonGeneralHospital have many more. A number of electronic dictionaries are available online from Modern Languages computers and over the INTERNET.

DIGITAL RADIO and TELEVISION

There are a large number of radio and TV stations around the world broadcasting both live and recorded programmes over the INTERNET. These can be accessed for example, at or from individual broadcasters’ web pages.

NGLISH LANGUAGE

Materials are to be found in the English area in the LRC, and in the English Language Resources Room (room 2099). Look for links to Internet based resources from Modern Languages web pages at through the University’sVirtual Learning Environment, Blackboard (e.g. the Study Skills Toolkit or the Interntional Students’ Online Resources for which you will need to enrol). See ADVISORY SERVICE for language support.

RENCH

Materials are in the French Language area in the LRC and in the FRENCH RESOURCES ROOM (Room 2109). Look for links to Internet based resources from Modern Languages web pages at

FRENCH RESOURCES ROOM

Reference materials and resources of particular interest to Modern Language students are held in the French Resources Room (Room 2109). Viewing, listening and computing facilities and current and back copies of French newspapers and magazines are available. The French assistants can also be contacted through Room 2109 and are available for conversational and general support. Check noticeboard for hours.

ERMAN

Materials are kept in the German area in the Language Resources Centre (Room 2155) and in the GERMAN RESOURCES ROOM (2097). Look for links to Internet based resources from Modern Languages web pages at

GERMAN RESOURCES ROOM

The GERMAN RESOURCES ROOM (Room 2097) provides social and study space for Modern Language and other students. Viewing and computing facilities and current and back numbers of German newspapers and magazines are available. The German assistantscan also be contacted in Room 2097 and are available for conversational and general support. Check noticeboard for hours.

GRAMMAR

Grammar reference and books are available on reference shelves in language areas. A variety of software packages also provide grammar reference and practice.

GUIDES

A number of Study and Access Guides are to be found on the information shelves outside and around the LRC (Room 2155). Topics for Study Guides include: strategies to improve language learning; dictionary use; learning vocabulary and using satellite TV for language learning. ARTLEY LIBRARY

The Languages area on the ground floor has a wide range of language resources (English, French, German, Italian, Spanish) including audio and video. If you are an international student you will also find the English Language Advisory service here.

The IMC Room (Room 2159) offers a flexible learning and teaching environment with access to a range of digital materials and IT.

INFORMATION SYSTEMS SERVICES (ISS)

A range of language materials are available on all public workstations on the Avenue Campus.

INTERNET

Access the Internet through the Modern Languages Homepage ( Use our ‘useful web links’( asstarting points for general research, news, on-line journals, museums etc. The Internet is also available at public workstations.

ANGUAGE COURSES ABROAD

There is a collection of brochures relating to foreign language summer courses abroad in the LRCand individual Resources Rooms.

LANGUAGE (TANDEM PARTNER) EXCHANGES

Learners wanting to offer a language in exchange for practice in another should advertise on the notice board outside the LRC.

LANGUAGE LEVEL

Language level with coloured dots is indicated on course books in the most commonly taught languages. See notices for details. (These relate to the 7 Southamptonlanguage stages.)

LANGUAGE RESOURCES CENTRE (LRC)

One of the roles of the LRC (room 2155) is to provide language learning resources and facilities for the all staff and students of the University. See floor plan for details.

LOANS

It is possible to take certain learning materials out on short loan. Please ask for more information.

LOCAL AREA NETWORK (LAN)

Modern Languages student workstations are linked to the Modern Languages servers providingaccess to a range of specialist computer-based resources.

LSP (LANGUAGES FOR SPECIFIC PURPOSES)

Materials relating to specific discipline areas (e.g. law, science, engineering) are to be found in relevant language areas and in the different Language resources rooms.

LUNCHTIME COURSES

Lunchtime language classeswhich start each year in November are available to all staff and students of the Unviersity. Please contact the CLS office (Room 2191) for more information.

AGAZINES

A selection of general and specialist magazines are available in the LRC in English and the most commonly taught languages. Back issues are kept in individual language resources rooms.

MELISSI This is a digital classroom based in the MULTIMEDIA SUITE which provides access to a range of digital resources and language learning activities.

MODERN LANGUAGES WORKSTATIONS

Computers in the LRC and the FRENCH, GERMAN, SPANISH, ENGLISH, SouthamptonGeneralHospital and Hartley Library are link to the MODERN LANGUAGES Network. You will find a range of language software and Internet facilities.

MULTIMEDIA SUITE(Room 2153)

Use the multimedia suite in the LRC to enhance your learning. Facilities include video conferencing, satellite TV, recording and subtitling as well as access to a range of multimedia materials.

EWSPAPERS

Current editions of ENGLISH, FRENCH, GERMAN, ITALIAN, PORTUGUESE and SPANISH weekly newspapers are available in the LRC. Daily newspapers (except for Le Mondeand The Independent) and all back issues are located in the individual resources rooms. A large variety of newspapers are available on-line via the INTERNET.

NOTICE BOARDS

CLS noticeboards on Upper level 2 hold details of undergraduate language classes. MODERN LANGUAGES notice boards are situated on Level 3 near the MODERN LANGUAGES office.

PENING HOURS

Opening hours of the LRC are TERM-TIME: Monday– Thursday, 9.00-21.00; Friday, 9.00-17.00. VACATIONS: Monday–Thursday, 9.00-17.00; Friday, 9.00-16.00. Please note that peak use of the LRC and its resources is between 11.00 and 15.30. You will find it easier to find space to work if you can visit outside these times.

OTHER LANGUAGES

Less commonly taught language materials include those for ARABIC, CHINESE, DANISH, DUTCH, JAPANESE, GREEK, POLISH, RUSSIAN, SWEDISH and TURKISH (see catalogues for details). A range of text, audio and video materials are availablein the LRC.

ART-TIMECOURSES

You can take anevening language class at the right language stage for you. The Part-Time Courses Office (Room 2175) is on Upper Level 2 of the Avenue Campus.

PHOTOCOPYING

During term time a student photocopier is available in the Avenue Library on Upper Level 2. Photocopy cards may be purchased from the machine on the wall nearby. Language resources may be borrowed from the LRC for photocopying upon deposit of a student card. PLEASEreturn all materials.

PORTUGUESE

There are a number of materials both in the SPLAS RESOURCES ROOM (Room 2103) and in the LRC. Look for links to Internet based resources from MODERN LANGUAGES web pages at

PRINTERS

There are printers and scanners in all ISS Computing workstation areas.

PRONUNCIATION

A file containing useful suggestions for pronunciation practice for non-native speakers of English is available in the English areain the LRCThere are a number of software programmes for pronunciation practice in other languages.

UESTIONS

A resources assistant is available to help you use equipment and find materials, please do not hesitate to ask if you have any questions regarding resources. If you are new to the LRC, you might like to book an appointment with one of the advisors who will show you around and discuss your needs. See Advisory Service.

ECORDING

Listen to audio tapes then record your voice and compare it with native speaker originals in the MULTIMEDIA SUITE and increasingly, on multimedia computer programs with digital recording facilities. Look for the Study GUIDE suggesting ways to work on pronunciation and fluency on the carousel in the Language Resources Centre (Room 2155).

REFERENCE MATERIALS

GRAMMAR reference books anddictionaries are on reference shelves in individual language areas in the Language Resources Centre and in the ENGLISH, FRENCH, GERMAN and SPANISH RESOURCES ROOMS. A small number of dictionaries are also kept at SouthamptonGeneralHospital, WSA, NOCS and Hartley Library.

RESIDENCE ABROAD

A topic box containing resources to help prepare for the Year Abroad is available in the LRC. Notices concerning residence abroad are put on the board near the CLS office. There is a web-site to support students on their residence abroad at

ATELLITE TELEVISION

Default channels available to watch in the LRC and individual resources rooms include English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish stations. Many other stations from other parts of the world are available on request. Radio and television programmes magazines can be found in the LRC (Room 2155). See also DIGITAL RADIO and TELEVISION.

SELF

The Southampton English Language Forum has a small teachers’ library in the Comenius Centre.

SELF-ACCESS (RESOURCES and COURSES)

Self-access language learning materials aim to provide all that is necessary for independent learners. Many of the resources in the Language Resources Centre are self-contained, complete with exercises, guidance notes, answer keys and transcripts, (see TOPIC BOXES) and many are digital. Published courses are available in English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish and a range of other languages. Please visit the CLS office (Room 2191) for lists of courses available.

SOUTHAMPTONGENERALHOSPITAL

Computer-based and other materials are available for international students in the main library at SouthamptonGeneralHospital.

SPANISH

Materials are in the Spanish language area in the LRC and in the SPLAS RESOURCES ROOM (Room 2103). Look for links to Internet based resources from MODERN LANGUAGES web pages at

SPLAS RESOURCES ROOM

The SPLAS (Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American) RESOURCES ROOM (2103) provides social and study space for MODERN LANGUAGES and other students. Viewing and computer facilities and current and back issues of newspapers and magazines are available. The Spanishand Portuguese Language Assistants are available for consultation.

SPECIAL NEEDS

Workstations with specialised software for learners with disabilities is available on Upper Level 2 at the Avenue Campus. Contact the Resources Assistants if you have particular needs that we might be able to help you with. A number of the computers in the LRC support large fonts and text scanners are available.

STUDY SKILLS

There are a number of materials which will help students of any language focus on study skills. These are held in the LRC.

EACHERS’ LIBRARY

A small library of resources for MA Applied Linguistics/ELT and language teachers is available in the Comenius Centre (Room 2165). See also COMENIUS CENTRE.

TELETEXT

Satellite and terrestrial television teletext is available on televisions in the LRC, individual resources rooms and on MODERN LANGUAGES workstations. Foreign language subtitles are often on Page 888.

TOPIC BOXES

Specialist topic boxes holding printed materials, audio and video recordings are available in English, French, German Portuguese Spanish. There are accompanying exercises, transcripts and answer keys. A menu at the front of each box lists contents.

IDEO CASSETTES

Video recordings and individual language catalogues are kept at several locations in the LRC (Room 2155). View in the MULTIMEDIA SUITEand at individual monitors in the LRC and in theENGLISH, FRENCH, GERMAN and SPLAS RESOURCES ROOMS. Increasingly video files will be available over the Internet. The Avenue Library also has a large number of foreign language films and viewing facilities.We record news broadcasts in the major languages on a regular basis during term-time. These may be available in MP3 format.

W

ORD PROCESSING

As in any version of MS Word, you can change the language, spellcheckers and Thesaurus, as you need.

Use ISS workstations to access Word as only Word Viewer is installed on the LRC computers.

WI-FI

You can use your own laptop in designated areas of the LRC to access the INTERNET.
