First Sunday in Lent February 22, 2015
CELEBRATION OF THE LORD’S DAY
In consideration of other worshipers, please turn cell phones and mobile devices off or to silent mode. Thank you.
WE GATHER IN GOD’S PRESENCE
MUSIC FOR THE GATHERING OF THE WORSHIPERS
Jesus, I Will Ponder Now Johann Gottfried Walther
(lighting of the candles, Hope Marshall)
As the pastor and acolyte enter the sanctuary, let us pause in thoughtful silence and begin our worship.
OUR LIFE TOGETHER…
(During the announcements, please fill out the fellowship pad and pass it back and forth through your pew in order that we may greet one another by name after worship.)
GATHERING SONG (sung twice by all)
Gather us, O God, body, spirit, soul and mind.
Gather us, O God, one in union now with you.
CALL TO WORSHIP: Psalm 25 Anne K. Hedin, Liturgist
One: Lord, make me know your ways, teach me your paths
and keep me in the way of your truth, for you are God, my Savior.
All: To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul.
One: For the Lord is good and righteous, revealing the way to those who wander,
gently leading the poor and the humble.
All: To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul.
One: To the ones who seek the Lord, who look to God’s word, who live God’s love,
God will always be near, and will show them mercy.
All: To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul.

*PRAYER OF CONFESSION
One: If we say that we’re all right,
All: We are blind and will not see.
One: If we say our world’s all right,
All: We are deaf and will not hear.
One: But if we confess our sins,
All: God will forgive us.
One: Let us therefore acknowledge our sin:
All: God, you love us but we have not loved you; you call, but we have not
listened. We walk away from neighbors in need, wrapped up in our own
concerns. We have gone along with evil, prejudice, warfare, and greed.
Help us face up to ourselves, so that, as you move toward us in mercy,
we may repent, turn to you, recognize forgiveness, and be remade,
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
*ASSURANCE OF GOD’S FORGIVENESS
*RESPONSE: Lord, Let My Heart Be Good Soil
Lord, let my heart be good soil,
open to the seed of your word.
Lord, let my heart be good soil,
where love can grow and peace is understood.
When my heart is hard, break the stone away.
When my heart is cold, warm it with the day.
When my heart is lost, lead me on your way.
Lord, let my heart, Lord, let my heart, Lord, let my heart be good soil.
*PASSING THE PEACE
WE GROW AS WE LISTEN TO GOD’S WORD
MESSAGE FOR OUR CHILDREN
(Following the message, children may go with their teachers to Children’s Church on the second floor of the education building where they may be picked up after worship. Nursery care is available for our youngest children.)

ANTHEM – A Lenten Prayer Hal H. Hopson
Lord, who throughout these forty days for us didst fast and pray,
Teach us with thee to mourn our sins, and close by thee to stay.
Jesus walked this lonesome valley, he had to walk it by himself;
Oh nobody else could walk it for him, he had to walk it by himself.
We must walk this lonesome valley, we have to walk it by ourselves;
Oh nobody else can walk it for us, we have to walk it by ourselves.
You must go and stand your trial, you have to stand it by yourself,
Oh, nobody else can stand it for you, you have to stand it by yourself.
And through these days of penitence, and through thy Passiontide,
Yea, evermore, in life and death, O Lord, with us abide.
READING: Mark 1:9-15 Page 34 in the pew Bibles (N.T.)
SERMON The Reverend Robert J. Hagel
*HYMN OF THE DAY No. 409 Wild and Lone the Prophet’s Voice Aberystwyth
*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH: Apostles’ Creed
One: Let us confess the faith of our baptism, as we say:
All: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven;
he is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and he will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church,
the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

HYMNAL FUND. The Presbyterian Church has published a new hymnal that Cindy, our Music Minister, finds to be a wonderful addition to her hymnal shelf. The Worship Committee, with the permission of Session, has decided to put together a fundraiser to purchase enough of the “Glory To God” hymnals for the sanctuary and the chapel. Everyone should have received a letter outlining this fundraiser. Each hymnal costs $21.00 and you are encouraged to gift a hymnal(s) to the church. (You also can purchase your own copy if you would like.) Bookplates are available to put in the hymnals if you would like to honor or remember someone with your gift. The hope is to have these wonderful song books installed by June and the Worship Committee is hoping that we can get most of the gifts in near Easter. Please send your order sheet in with your payment to the church business office or put into the collection plate on a Sunday morning.
