Indicative Salary Range/Grade / Spinal points 13 -18
£16,491 - £17,419 pa rising to £18,070 pa (pro rata based on full time equivalent of 37 hours per week)
Hours / 15.5 hours per week
Work base / HMP Lewes

Main Purpose of Job
Working within the prison Visits Hall and the Visitors’ Centre to deliver high quality refreshment service to visitors and prisoners during visiting hours.
Preparing snacks and sandwiches prior to and during the visits, ensuring high standards of presentation. Working across sites where necessary.
Key Tasks List
  1. Treat visitors and staff with respect.
2 Undertake the ordering of catering supplies, check and store deliveries.
  1. Working on a rota basis, ensure the snack bar is staffed adequately, and opened and closed on time, to maximise sales.
  1. Prepare sandwiches and snacks prior to and during the visits, ensuring high standards of presentation and working to dish specifications.
  1. To assist in the catering for Family Days and other occasions as directed by the Deputy manager.
  1. Undertake daily stock check and ensure snack bar is equipped prior to the first morning and afternoon session.
  1. Carry out periodic stock takes, providing accurate information within given timescales.
  1. Comply with Health & Safety and Food Hygiene regulations, maintaining records for inspection, including the Safer Food, Better Business file.
  1. Efficient handling of cash purchases, use of electric cash register.
  1. Balancing cash totals and re-floating tills at end of the day, following directed procedures and completing financial records accurately.
  1. Train catering staff in food preparation and identify further training needs.
  1. Observe standards of personal hygiene and dress as directed by Food Hygiene legislation, using uniforms and protective clothing where supplied.
  1. To liaise with the prison visits staff (and others as appropriate) to ensure the smooth and efficient operation of the snack bar area
  1. To work in accordance with Spurgeons policy and practice guidelines.
  1. To attend relevant security training and adhere to prison guidelines and regulations at all times.
  1. To contribute to the work of Spurgeons and to play a full and active role as a member of the larger staff team.
  1. To attend regular meetings and supervision sessions, and training courses as deemed necessary.
  1. To receiving and storing of deliveries.
  1. To undertake any other relevant duties as deemed necessary.

Person Specification

Attainments / In order to be considered for this post you will have to demonstrate that you already have:

Qualifications

/
  • General education to GCSE standard preferably including Maths and English
  • Food Safety Foundation Certificate Level 2

Experience

/
  • To have worked in the catering service industry
  • Experience of conducting monthly stock takes and undertaking daily stock checks
  • To have worked as part of a team, individually and liaising with a variety of staff.
  • Experience in the use of electric cash till and handing cash in a safe manner and following financial procedures.

Work Based Knowledge

/
  • Preparing snacks and sandwiches to a high standard
  • Possess basic computer skills to undertake on line ordering.
  • Familiarity with working to an agreed rota, across sites.
  • An understanding of the specific requirements for working within an security setting and following prison rules and regulations..

Skills

/
  • Good customer service skills
  • Participatein delivering basic training to new staff/volunteers

Circumstances / This post has the following special circumstances:
  • Regular travel across sites within a cluster area
  • Working across the prison visitor centres/halls where visitors (including children and young people) meet with prisoners in the presence of prison staff.
  • Flexible approach to hours and place of work due to need to ensure all visiting service meet contractual requirements and supporting the needs of colleagues and service users.
  • Appointment is subject to prison security clearance.
