PROGRAM SYLLABUS

Program Overview: The carpentry program prepares students for employment in the carpentry and cabinetmaking industry with a stress on basic carpentry/cabinetmaking skills. Upon completion students can enter the construction industry as skilled labors, carpentry or cabinetmaking helpers, or even as first-year carpenters. The program requires a 70% mastery of all modules in order to obtain National Center for Construction Education and Research, (NCCER) certification.

Students can qualify for Bright Futures Scholarships if they take three semesters of carpentry and maintain a 3.0 grade point average (GPA).

Resources/Materials: Text, National Center for Construction Education and Research: Core Curriculum – Instructor handouts, videos, demonstrations, power point presentations and internet research.

Instructional Strategies: The instructor will require students to identify, organize and use resources appropriately. Upon completion of level one students will be able to work with each other cooperatively and productively, to acquire and use information, and to work with a variety of tools and equipment. Industry certification through the National Center for Construction Education and Research, (NCCER) can be obtained and is a nationally recognized program used throughout the country.

Week 1: Welcome/Orientation (1 week) August 19-22 Students will: Go over class information (rules and procedures), setup notebooks, fill out and return parent paperwork, interview and introduce fellow student to class. S.P.S’s. covered – 10.0, 7.0

Week 2: Classroom building (1 week) August 25-29 Students will: Opening week survey, lab safety sign worksheet, breakout into groups with project managers, review lab grade criteria and mission statements. S.P.S.’s covered: 1.01, 10.05, 7.03, 7.04

Week 3: Lab Activities and Demonstrations – (1 week) September 1-5 Students will: Students will work in the lab applying learned skills and demonstrating safe use of power tools. As part of our curriculum we build and sell outdoor projects. Mandatory performance testing per NCCER.

Students will: use portable power tools in a safe and appropriate manner, maintain a clean, orderly, and safe work area, and follow written and oral instructions. Students will work with each other cooperatively and productively to complete group projects.

Week 4: Circular Saw: Rules and Parts: (1 week) September 8-12 Students will: receive handouts on circular saw parts and rules; make notes for wall of knowledge; explain wall o f knowledge; instructor demo and lecture. Student practice and mastery of circular saw. Test 100 mastery.

Upon completion of this unit the student will be able to: Identify and explain the function of the 11 parts of a circular saw; List and define the 14 safety rules of the circular saw; demonstrate proficiency in the safe use of the circular saw. S.P.S’s covered: 2.0, 1.0

Week 5: Basic Safety: Core Curriculum N.C.C.E.R (1 week) Sept 15-19 Students will: Using guide read and complete Module 101-04 Basic Safety – Power Point presentation. Instructor and upper level demonstrations on safety harness, proper lifting and examples of personal protective equipment.. Performance testing – students will demonstrate and perform basic safety tasks; inspect P.P.E, don and remove safety harness, and demonstrate safe lifting procedures.

Upon completion of this unit the student will be able to:

Ø Identify and follow safe work practices and procedures

Ø Demonstrate and describe safe work procedures for lifting heavy objects, fighting fires and working around electrical hazards.

Week 6: Lab Activities and Demonstrations – (1 week) September 22-26 Students will: Students will work in the lab applying learned skills and demonstrating safe use of power tools. As part of our curriculum we build and sell outdoor projects. Mandatory performance testing per NCCER.

Week 7: Construction Math: Core Curriculum N.C.C.E.R. (4 days) Sep 29-Oct 3 Students will: Using study guide read and complete Module 102-04: Introduction to Construction Math.. Power Point presentation and instructor review. Students with a good math understanding or are enrolled in advance math classes may take test immediately. Written test. No performance testing on this module.

Upon completion of this module student will be able to:

Ø Use basic mathematical operations commonly used in the construction industry.

Ø Recognize basic shapes used in the construction industry, and apply basic geometry to measure them.

Ø Add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers, fractions and decimals, as well as convert decimals, fractions and percentages.

Week 8: Introduction to Hand Tools (1 week) October 6-10 Students will: Using study guide read and complete Module 103-04; Introduction to Hand Tools. Power Point presentation and instructor review. Instructor hand out. Written test. Performance test – inspect certain tools for safe use, use a hand saw to make a square cut, and safely and properly use hand tools.

Upon completion of this module the student will be able to:

Ø Recognize and identify basic hand tools.

Ø Safely use hand tools.

Ø Explain the basic procedures for taking care of hand tools.

Week 9: Introduction to Power Tools (1 week) October 13-17 Students will: Using study guide read and complete Module 104-04: Introduction to Power Tools with Power Point presentation with instructor review. Written test with 70% mastery or re-do.

Performance test: Safely and properly operate the following tools: Electric drill; circular saw; bench grinder; portable belt sander; and pneumatic power nailer.

Upon completion of this module the student will be able to:

Ø Identify power tools commonly used in the construction trades.

Ø Use power tools safely.

Ø Explain how to maintain power tools properly.

Week 10: Lab Activities and Demonstrations October 20-24: At appropriate times during the semester students will work in the lab applying learned skills and demonstrating safe use of power tools. As part of our curriculum we build and sell outdoor projects. (Mandatory performance testing per NCCER)

Week 11: Introduction to Blueprints (1 week) October 27-31 Students will using instructor supplied study guide read and complete modular 105-04; Introduction to Blueprint Reading with power point presentation and instructor review (additional hand-outs provided). (Written test.)

Performance test; using the blueprints in the back of the module be able to locate and identify various dimensions and symbols.

Upon completion of this module the student will be able to:

Ø Recognize and identify basic blueprint terms, components, and symbols

Ø Relate information on blueprints to actual locations on the prints.

Ø Recognize different classification of drawings.

Weeks 12&13: Group Project: Building a Hurricane-Hardened House (2 weeks) November 3-14 Students will after reading the article “Hurricane Warnings,” and watching the DVD by Bob Villa on how to build a Hurricane Hardened Home the students will get into their groups and design and build (on paper) a Hurricane Hardened Home. Each student will be assigned a section of the house.

A group presentation and research paper at end of project.

Upon completion of this project the student will be able to:

Ø Identify common risk factors of home building to hurricanes

Ø Be able to explain and demonstrate how to build a hurricane-resistant home

Ø Explain how houses are effected by hurricanes and what can be done to lessen these effects.

Ø Explain the purpose and importance of the codes relating to hurricanes.

Week 14: Basic Communication (1 week) November 17-21 Students will using the instructor supplied study guide and power point presentation complete module 107-04; Basic Communication (written test).

Performance Test includes:

· Write a daily report, ensuring it is clear, concise and correct

· Fill out work-related forms

· Read instructions for how to properly don a safety harness, and orally instruct your group leader to put on the harness.

Upon completion of this module the student will be able to:

Ø Demonstrate the ability to interpret information and instructions presented in both written and verbal form.

Ø Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively in on-the-job situations using both written and verbal skills.

Weeks 15&16: Basic Employability (2 weeks) December 1-12 Students will using instructor supplied study guide and power point presentation complete module 108-4; Basic Employability Skills. Students will learn how to effectively use critical-thinking, computer, and relationship skills in the construction industry. (Written test).

Performance Testing includes:

· Prepare and submit a complete employment application

· Demonstrate the ability to access, retrieve, and print from the following basic software programs: email, data bases, and internet.

· Develop a list detailing how employees can effect their companies profitability and its ability to reward employees.

Upon completion of this module the student will be able to:

Ø Explain the construction industry, the role of companies, and the role of individual professionals.

Ø Demonstrate “critical-thinking” skills and the ability to solve problems.

Ø Demonstrate effective relationship skills with team-mates and supervisors.

Week 17: Lab Activities and Demonstrations - December 15 - 19: At appropriate times during the semester students will work in the lab applying learned skills and demonstrating safe use of power tools. As part of our curriculum we build and sell outdoor projects.

Week 18: Review and Exams (1 weeks) January 12-16 Students will Review previous modules and study guides for preparation and completion of Final Exam. Notebooks up to date and all bell ringers cards accounted and reviewed.
