Points will be given each day for participation in class, including attempting to use German in the classroom. You will be assessed in listening comprehension, speaking ability, reading and comprehension, writing, and cultural understanding. Progress will be measured through tests (both written and verbal), quizzes, presentations, assignments, and projects. Some assessments will be formal and some informal. Grades can be viewed at www.wsdinfo.net (“The Portal”). Nearly everything we do is posted on the blog if you miss class.

Citizenship

Citizenship is a reflection of your willingness to follow the above policies and your attitude toward your instructor, your peers, and your school. Your willingness to speak German (not your ability to speak) is part of your citizenship. This is a German class!

·  H (Honor) Exemplary behavior above and beyond the call of duty. Spoke German.

·  S (Satisfactory) Students who do what is required of them—follow the rules and

“do their duty”. Mostly spoke German.

·  N (Needs Improvement) Students who establish patterns of misbehavior, are tardy,

often unprepared. Students who have to be continually reminded to speak German.

·  U (Unsatisfactory) Students who continue to have inappropriate behavior or crude

language will be given a U. If you refuse to use German, sneak in music to tune us out, and use a cell phone/ipad at inappropriate times you will receive a U.

Class Goals and Methodology

Frau Sandstrom is committed to help you learn German by:

·  Using German during class time

·  Preparing relevant, meaningful lessons that focus on language proficiency

·  Creating a positive learning environment that includes a variety of methods and mediums

·  Being available for parent/student questions and concerns

Student Agreements/Expectations

·  Treat all peers and instructor respectfully and politely

·  Come prepared with a notebook, marker, and writing utensil.

·  Participate in all class activities. Avoid behaviors that distract the teacher or other students

·  Be in your assigned seat when the tardy bell rings.

·  Follow directions the first time they are given.

·  Follow the dress code, including no hat.

Policies: Attendance, Dress code, Cell Phones

·  The school attendance policy will be strictly enforced (Midriffs , no hats, shorts to be the length of your arm, and sleeves to cover the cap of your shoulder, underwear out of sight--see student handbook)

·  Cell phones/mobile devices will be used from time to time in class. I will hang up the cell phone card when cell phones/MDs are in use. Please ONLY use them for what we are doing. No texting, games, etc. Violations: cell phone/MD will be taken and given to the administration.

Media

I use anything and everything that I can get my hands on to help you learn German including:

·  Music

·  Movies

·  Snips of interviews

·  Commercials

·  Slides/Pictures

Seldom do I use a whole movie, but rather choose odd scenes and snips for their use of language or culture. Students may also bring things to share with the class (music, etc.), but it must be clean—nothing illegal, immoral or obscene.

Odds and Ends

·  I retain the right to MAKE EXCEPTIONS to these policies on a per need basis.

·  Only quality work will be accepted, I do not accept unfinished assignments.

·  Extra credit will be offered every quarter.

Donations Needed (extra credit)

·  German newspapers, magazines and books

·  Bags of candy for rewards

·  Guest speakers who speak German

·  Kleenex

·  Ties

·  Game pieces from scrap games (monopoly, etc)
