CMU Alumni Association Awards: Category Descriptions

Alumni Achievement Awards - The Alumni Association presents two types of achievement awards, an Alumni Achievement Award and an Alumni Lifetime Achievement Award. Both of these awards are for accomplishment in the nominee's profession and are intended to recognize both accomplishment and leadership in the field which brings honor to Carnegie Mellon University. The contribution(s) do not need to be publicly renowned, but should represent important creative effort or accomplishment with societal or educational value. The Alumni LifetimeAchievement Award is intended to recognize both longevity and consistency of accomplishment over one's professional lifetime and impact in their field and may not be awarded every year.

Alumni Service Awards - The Alumni Association presents two types of alumni service awards, an Alumni Service Award and an Alumni Distinguished Service Award. These awards are intended to recognize service to Carnegie Mellon University only and will not consider volunteer service to other organizations in the nominee's home community. Similarly, Carnegie Mellon employees or those alumni with business relationships to the university are not eligible on the basis of their employment duties or their business services. These awards recognize volunteer service to the university or any of its alumni organizations including especially active participation in alumni or university affairs, faithful and continued effort in maintaining class, chapter, interest group, college or department groups or other alumni organizations, groups or entities, or assistance in expanding the influence and prestige of Carnegie Mellon. Financial contributions are specifically excluded from consideration for this award, although volunteer service soliciting contributions or service on the boards of fundraising organizations is considered. Several dimensions of service beyond longevity of service will be considered, such as breadth of service (service to multiple organizations) and impact of volunteer service on the organization and the university. The Alumni DistinguishedService Awardis intended to recognize both longevity of service and consistency of service over a lifetime of dedication to the university and may not be awarded every year. A general guideline would be at least two decades of service.

The award recognizes the student's involvement in service primarily to the university community and in service organizations while on campus. Service to the local community surrounding campus may also be considered. To be considered, nominations must be received while the student is currently enrolled. Students who have already completed their course of study at the time of their nomination will not be considered.
