Career Exploration Workshop

9:30 a.m. - 4 p.m. in the Life Sciences Building and Thomas Building
The Graduate School at Penn State is hosting a Career Exploration Workshop on Saturday, October 15 from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the Life Sciences Building and Thomas Building that is intended for currently-enrolled graduate students, including Penn State World Campus students and students at campuses other than University Park.
The workshop will begin with an opening plenary session titled, “Choosing the Right Career Path.” Two concurrent panel sessions, one in the morning and one in the afternoon, are designed to help prepare students as they enter into the workforce by providing valuable tools necessary to navigate and thrive in today’s job market.
Panelists include Graduate School alumni who are leading professionals in their fields. A list of panelists is available on careerworkshop.psu.edu. More detailed information about each panelist, including employment history and accomplishments can be found in the Panelist section of the website.
Registration for the workshop is required for all participants. All graduate students are invited to attend. We are also pleased to announce that World Campus graduate students and those at campuses other than University Park can participate virtually.We are offering a livestream of the opening plenary session, one morning concurrent session, Session B: Searching for the Right Job, and one afternoon concurrent session, Session C: Interviewing and Negotiating the Job Offer.

10:45 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. / Concurrent Sessions I
  • Session A: Crafting Curriculum Vitaes and Resumes
    This session will be hands-on, and attendees will have the opportunity to participate in exercises intended to enhance their CVs and resumes. Participants are encouraged to bring a copy of their current CV/resume to share during the open networking session in the afternoon.
  • Session B: Searching for the Right Job*
    This session will give participants an overview of what they should keep in mind when searching for a job. Panelists will share their job history and career exploration experiences with graduate students.
  • Session C: Interviewing and Negotiating the Job Offer
    Interviewing skills can make or break a job offer. This session will explore the skills job seekers need to have when interviewing and negotiating job offers.

12:15 – 1:30 p.m. / Networking Lunch (Lunch will be provided for those attending in person)
1:45 – 3:00 p.m. / Concurrent Sessions II
  • Session A: Refining Writing and Presentations Skills
    This session will help attendees develop their academic and professional writing and presentation skills. Panelists will share tips about how to communicate clearly and effectively, with multiple audiences.
  • Session B: Searching for the Right Job
    This session will give participants an overview of what they should keep in mind when searching for a job. Panelists will share their job history and career exploration experiences with graduate students.
  • Session C: Interviewing and Negotiating the Job Offer*
    Interviewing skills can make or break a job offer. This session will explore the skills job seekers need to have when interviewing and negotiating job offers.
