Capacity Building Fellowships

2018-2019

Muso

Muso is a rapidly growing non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that operates in Mali, a West African country at the epicenter of the maternal and child mortality crisis. Partnering with the Malian Ministry of Health, Muso has built a new kind of ultra-rapid health system that removes barriers, brings care to patients proactively, and transforms health outcomes in some of the world’s poorest communities. Through programming, research, and advocacy, Muso works with communities in Mali to create lasting change. More information is available at

Fellowship Overview and Requirements

Each year, Muso selects up to four exceptional applicants as Capacity Building Fellows, working to strengthen our health system in Mali. The year-long volunteer Capacity Building Fellow positions are high impact roles. As we are a small, rapidly growing global health organization, each fellow plays an important role in the strategic growth of our work, and has a tangible impact on the hundreds of thousands of community members we serve. Through our close partnerships with Partners in Health, Tostan, MASS Design, Medic Mobile, and others, fellows also connect into the broader movement of global health equity.

Muso’s fellowship posts begin with flexible start dates that depend on departure dates of outgoing fellows. Fellows participate in pre-departure orientation with Muso’s CEO, followed by two weeks of intensive field training and orientation with Malian program directors and other program staff.

We support one round-trip plane ticket to Bamako, Mali, and offer a monthly stipend for room and board with a host family which we arrange.

All fellowships require a commitment to social justice, strong work ethic, and a year-long commitment. French proficiency is required for each type of fellowship. While some fellows come to us with several years of work or research experience and/or an advanced degree, we also accept dynamic and committed recent college graduates. Each fellow lives in the communities of Yirimadjo, Mali and works closely with Malian colleagues.

Types of Fellowships Available

Communications Fellows

The Communications Fellow will bridge the gap between our day-to-day programmatic work in Mali and our development team in the United States. You will be responsible for developing ways to effectively and creatively tell the stories of our patients, CHWs, and the communities we work in, and then disseminate those stories through our website and social media. Skill sets in journalism, marketing, and videography are highly desirable. Photography experience required.

Health Systems Fellows

The Health Systems Fellow will support ongoing innovations and improvements to Muso’s proactive healthcare delivery model. You will be responsible for conducting best practices research, reviewing and synthesizing scientific and public health literature regarding key program design questions, and supporting Muso’s Training Director on curriculum development and improvement. Background in global health, research literature review skills, and strong writing and communication skills are preferred.

R&D Fellows

Just as patients deserve medications that have been proven to work, so do communities deserve health systems that have proven efficacy. For Muso, rigorous measurement is our moral responsibility. Our team tests the healthcare innovations we develop through rigorous, population-based research, to inform national and global efforts on universal health care and maternal/child health. Muso’s R&D Fellow will work closely with Muso’s Director of Research to support the launch and advance multiple population-level studies to assess the impact of proactive healthcare delivery. Skills in scientific literature review, research study design, data cleaning, data analysis (using SAS or similar data analysis software) preferred.
