POSITION: Senior Information Specialist

REPORTS TO: Manager, Cancer Information Service

LOCATION: Hamilton, ON

STATUS: Regular, Full-Time

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Senior Information Specialist provides cancer information by telephone and email for the Canada-wide Cancer Information Service as well as engaging in activities to increase awareness and utilization of Canadian Cancer Society services, and other organizational priorities.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

·  Responds to cancer information inquiries, by telephone and e-mail, from cancer patients, family and friends, Canadian Cancer Society staff and volunteers, the general public and heath care professionals across Canada.

·  Provides accurate and current information in understandable terms, much of which may be medical or scientific.

·  Researches, assesses and selects information, specific to the client's situation from appropriate resources.

·  Creates an environment of support for callers through active listening, offering support, assisting callers to identify their psychosocial needs and concerns, and offering appropriate resources and referral.

·  Communicates professionally with attention to sensitivity, clarity and without personal bias.

·  Participates in self-directed learning to maintain expected knowledge base, acquires new knowledge/information and keeps abreast of the latest developments in oncology and related fields.

·  Contributes to the upkeep of the Society’s databases of credible and current cancer information, materials, resources and community services.

·  Participates in projects, committees and key activities of the Cancer Information Service as assigned.

·  Contributes to outreach opportunities as appropriate in collaboration with internal and external partners.

·  Work in compliance with the provisions of the Occupational Health & Safety Act and its regulations.

·  Other projects as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

·  A Bachelor’s degree in nursing with a minimum of one year of related practical or clinical experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

·  Demonstrated client-service skills; ability to respond to sensitive issues.

·  Knowledge of cancer care systems and community health services delivery.

·  Excellent communication skills, including active listening

·  Expertise delivering key messages to a wide range of audiences.

·  Strong search skills and ability to critically appraisal and assimilate health literature.

·  Proficient working with office-based computer systems: MSOffice (Word/Excel/Powerpoint); sharepoint, internet, social media platforms and customized CRM databases.

·  Willingness to pursue and update personal knowledge about cancer and related issues.

·  Flexibility, organized, ability to multi-task, and deal with competing priorities.

·  Strong ability to problem-solve, reach sound resolutions and think strategically.

·  Demonstrated interpersonal skills and ability to work well within a team.

·  Previous experience in an oncology setting is an asset.

·  Knowledge of Canadian Cancer Society policies and procedures is an asset.

·  A criminal record check is required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

·  Office environment

·  Sits for extended periods.

·  Significant computer use.

·  Periodic early evening (15-20% of time per week or on a rotating basis)

·  Some short-term travel may be required within Ontario. (2 to 3 times per year depending on opportunities)

·  Ability to transport small boxes of resources/supplies to an event.
