Uplands Parents Advisory Council Meeting

Agenda Items:

1.0Call to Order:

The meeting was called to order by JenaforLansel at 7:30 p.m. in the Uplands Elementary Library.

2.0Approval of October Minutes:

Approval of the November 2017 Uplands PAC meeting minutes was motioned for approval by Ann Hurst and seconded by Holly Laughlin.

3.0Principal’s Report: Andrea DeVito

-Please see attached Principal’s Report.

-Andrea spoke to the group about Jim Kocsis, tennis pro, who is coming to the school for four sessions with intermediate students. The Western will be doing a story on the program. Tennis Canada will be buying the equipment used for the program and at the end of the program the equipment becomes property of the school. The program starts this week. The school has paid $200 for the program. The cost of the equipment is about $400. The in-service is therefore essentially free.

-Teacher wish list items update:

  • The noise-cancelling headphones have arrived.
  • The teachers have been discussing the possibility of taking their students skating and may see PAC support to help with costs associated.
  • The teachers have also been discussing Get Bent coming in to do Yoga and a skipping presentation.

-School Vison/Growth

  • SOGI workshop – Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity. The current policy is up on the school district 67 website. After the workshop discussion will begin in the classrooms.

-Rotary Youth Mental Wellness Initiative – Jan 30 at 2:00 at the Shatford Centre. This is an information night regarding young people and mental health issues presented by Dr. Patricia Pottie.

-Starfish backpack program – Uplands has about 7 families benefitting from the program. Donations of pantry items can brought to the office.

4.0Trustee’s Report: Barb Sheppard

Barb will send out her report after the next school board meeting on January 29. Barb emphasized her excitement about the Try A Trade program, which is for students K to grade 5.

5.0Treasurer’s Report: Heather Bifford

6.0Other Reports:

-Hot Lunch:

Report from Hot Lunch Coordinator Amber Cissel:

  • The new fridge is in. Big thanks to Lake City Appliance for their major discount of a brand-new fridge. Things are going smoothly for Hot Lunch so far this term.
  • Volunteers are needed, especially on pizza Fridays.
  • 3 volunteers are needed for pizza Fridays.
  • There was group brainstorming on ways to encourage parents to volunteer.

-Fundraising:

Report from Fundraising Coordinator Holly Laughlin:

  • Tomato fundraiser – Jenafor will contact Jill Bateman to see if she might be able to coordinate this fundraiser. This would occur sometime around March.
  • Fairview Liquor Store – if you mention Uplands Elementary the store will give a percentage of the sale to the school. Holly will contact the store to make sure they are still interested in participating.
  • Jessica Singleton Concert – Jessica is a local singer/songwriter who is looking to do a benefit concert for schools. She will perform two 45-minute sets of contemporary music. The PAC would have to rent a facility (i.e. Shatford Centre) and sell the tickets. The PAC chooses the amount for ticket pricing. Jessica’s service is free. Jenafor will contact Jessica.

-Facebook page:

Report from Social Media Coordinator Jennifer Morison:

  • Going well.
  • There are about 199 people who have ‘liked’ the page.
  • Discussion was had to change the name to “Penticton Uplands Parent’s Page.”

7.0Old Business

-Santa’s Workshop

  • Sales were very good this year.

-Online 50/50 raffle

  • It was decided that this could be done before the year-end party at Loco-Landing.

-Popcorn

  • Next popcorn days is January 23 with bagging the night before.

8.0New Business

-School Supplies

  • Megan is going to met with Tracy to ensure the program continues.

-Marathon

  • Ann advised the group that there is a need for a few more sponsors.

-Hoodoo’s fundraiser

  • Lyndie advised the group that Hoodoo’s would be interested in hosting a fundraiser for the school. It would need to have a pre-sign-up to ensure there would not be too many families at one time in the building.
  • They are also interested in having the grade 5’s for their end of the year party.
  • Lyndie advised that there are funds available to the school from this past year’s Santa Run.

10.0 Next Meeting:

- February 21, 2018, at 7:30 p.m. in the Uplands Elementary Library.

- There will be no meeting in March.
