CALLAWAY COUNTY COAD/CITIZEN CORPS COUNCIL

COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS ACTIVE IN DISASTER

CITIZEN CORP COUNCIL

The Callaway County COAD/Citizen Corps Council iscommunity organizations active in disaster structured and affiliated with the State of Missouri Mission of a Community Inter-Agency Disaster Organization and the Citizen Corps Council guidelines. We are based within Callaway County and open to representation from public, private and not-for-profit agencies. The Callaway County COAD is in operation to enhance the county’s ability to mitigate, prepare, respond and recover from disasters thus ensuring that human needs inherent in a disaster situation are evaluated and addressed.

Community Organizations Active in Disaster (COADs) may be considered the successors to Unmet Needs Committees from the 1993 Midwest Floods because they represent many human services providers and a concern for the relief and recovery of victims of disasters. For the past three years the similarity ends there. We have a have a much broader mission - to strengthen area-wide disaster coordination by sharing programs, policies, information, joint planning and training and address the unmet health care needs of Callaway County. In June of 2010 the Callaway County COAD became the governing body for both the Callaway County Medical Reserve Corps (MRC sponsored by the Callaway County Health Department) and Community Emergency Response Team (CERT sponsored by the Callaway County Emergency Management Agency). On April 4, 2011, the Callaway County COAD was approved as the Callaway County COAD/Citizen Corps Council.

Now in 2012 we are 38 agency/organizations strong with three working committees; the Faith-Based/Volunteer, Mass Care, and Human Resources. This month we add our fourth committee “Suicide Prevention”. Each working committee has a mission with goals and objectives:

  • Faith Based/Volunteer – Individual/family preparedness and design/operation of a Volunteer Reception Center.
  • Human Resources – To develop and maintain a communication system for establishing contact with Callaway County residents at the time of a disaster. To provide information, support, and coordinated agency services (local/state).
  • Mass Care –Addresses the core services needed at the time of a disaster: food, shelter, and clothing.
  • Suicide Prevention - To establish a working collaborative effort of community leaders and stakeholders assisting in implementing programs that will carry out local strategies addressing suicide. (unmet health care need)

Meeting Information all meetings are held the 2nd Thursday of each month at the Callaway County Health Department Community Meeting Room (4950 County Road 304, Fulton, MO). We are open to representation from public, private, not-for-profit agencies, and concerned citizens.

  • Committees meet from 10:00-11:00 a.m.
