The Event
The Dairy Research Foundation’s signature event, its annual Symposium, is widely recognised throughout the Australian dairy industry as a showcase of dairy science in application – that brings together the farm and dairy science communities with a special focus on nurturing and developing young and emerging scientists – and linking them with the farm sector.
The Program
The format of the 2017 Symposium is a combination of industry days, conference and farm. Day 1 is an industry day, Day 2 is a plenary conference in theatre style, while Day 3 is much less formal, a combination of plenary and concurrent sessions and all on farm – minus powerpoint facilities. It is on Day 3, at a local dairy farm in the Port Macquarie area, that the bulk of the Emerging Dairy Scientists’ program will take place, as we showcase the projects of approximately 8 young dairy scientists in what we regard to be a unique professional development opportunity.
Each participating young scientist will be asked to prepare a presentation that relies on flip charts and items to show and tell (strictly no use of PowerPoint). Scientists will be grouped together by ‘common interest/theme’ on platforms, with up to three young scientists per platform. They will need to present multiple times (normally 3-4 times) to groups of 20-50 people each time. Each platform will also feature a dairy industry mentor (a farmer/scientist/service provider) whose role will be to comment on the projects under profile and discuss how the work may be integrated at a farm level. Each young scientist will have five minutes to deliver their presentation. It is envisaged that up to 5 minutes of question and discussion should follow each young scientist’s presentation.
Is your project “right” for the event?
The whole philosophy of the Foundation is to nurture emerging dairy scientists. As long as your project is relevant to a dairy production system and has the capacity to have a positive impact on dairy farm productivity - then it is relevant to the event. We need your abstracts early so we can match finalists up with selected speakers to make a logical ‘flow’ to the program.
The process for participation in the Symposium’s Emerging Dairy Scientists’ Program
- Complete and lodge the expression of interest form and abstract by Friday April 28th
- Successful applicants will be notified by Monday May 8th
- Upon selection, scientists will be required to:
- Prepare a (maximum 2 page) paper for the Conference proceedings by Friday June 16th
- Instigate communication between yourself and the mentor allocated to your platform, in order to build a relationship and understanding. This relationship needs to be developed in a manner that when it comes to presentation day – the young scientists clearly have ‘rapport’ with the participating mentor. This communication/relationship should be instigated in a timely fashion so there is sufficient time to build an understanding between scientist and mentor in the three months between acceptance into the program and the event;
- Prepare and deliver a 60 second ‘promotion’ for your Platform during the Symposium dinner on Wednesday July 26th. No powerpoint will be available for this purpose. Creativity will be encouraged and rewarded;
- Prepare relevant documents for suitable application to a flip chart and collect suitable props in order to deliver on farm on Thursday July 27th, without electronic aids, a 5 minute presentation within the confines of your platform. (Note, each platform will run three-four times, so your presentation will be delivered (we estimate) to groups of approximately 20-50persons at a time).
- Expectations: All emerging scientists selected as finalists will be invited to join the industry event on Day 1 and they are expected to attend Day 2 of the conference program. Participants are encouraged to prepare questions for the Day 2 speakers and it would be great if each finalist could ask at least one question during question and panel time on Day 2. This is a great opportunity to get exposure and insight into the dairy industry.
- Support: Each finalist will receive a free registration to both days of conference and the conference dinner as well as travel and accommodation assistance.
Acknowledgements
The process will be competitive and subject to delegate assessment, with a ‘most popular young scientist’ announced at the completion of Day 3.
