Call for Application: ARPPIS PhD Fellowships

Call for applications for 3-year doctoral training in insect sciences (2014)

Application Deadline: August 1, 2014

The African Regional Postgraduate Programme in Insect Science (ARPPIS), a Pan-African partnership programme between African Universities and ICIPE, is calling applications for six (6) ARPPIS PhD fellowships tenable at ICIPE.

The fellowship which runs from 2014 – 2017, is aimed at preparing young scholars from Africa for regional leadership roles and internationally competitive research careers in arthropod related sciences.

Doctoral fellowship awards will be available for successful applicants in the following proposed research topics:

  1. Bioecology studies and development of IPM technologies against amaranth’s Coreid bugs and Lepidopteran defoliators (Requirements: MSc in Entomology, Zoology, Crop Protection, Agricultural Sciences or Crop Production)
  2. Development of a trapping system for management of Antesia bugs (Heperoptera: Pentatomidae) in coffee using semiochemicals (Requirements: MSc in Entomology, Plant Health or other relevant field. Experience with gas chromatography, insect bioassays and volatile entrainment techniques will be an added advantage)
  3. Investigating the mechanisms of African honey bee tolerance to the invasive pest Varroa destructor (Requirements: MSc in Entomology)
  4. Development and implementation of software to optimize field application of biopesticides for the management of arthropod pests. (Requirements: MSc in Computer science or Mathematics with skills in programming languages R, Java and Eclipse platform. Experience in quantitative analysis, use of model and knowledge of biological processes preferred; record of relating growth and spatial analysis and publication in peer-reviewed journal advantageous)
  5. Improving amaranth production through the use of biopesticides and compatible attractants for the management of lepidopterous pests (Requirements: MSc in Entomology or Microbiology)
  6. Field and laboratory studies of Aedes (stegomyia) species to assess Yellow Fever and Dengue risk in Northern Kenya (Requirements: MSc in Medical Entomology, with strong experience in field and laboratory activities, and with practical experience in classical virologic techniques)

Successful applicants are expected to begin their training in September 2014 or shortly thereafter.

Qualifications:
  1. Specific qualifications are listed below the research topics as advertised. All applicants must have BSc and MSc degrees with a minimum award of upper 2nd class degree or equivalent
