North Shore Chapter  4

NOSH 20 NEWS

THE MONTHLY PUBLICATION OF APICS NORTH SHORE CHAPTER #20 – NOVEMBER 2009

Outsourcing
Best Practices
Please welcome Dan O'Leary, CIRM, CBA, CQE, CRE, Six Sigma Black Belt, for our November meeting, who will be discussing Outsourcing Best Practices. Also please review page 4 of the newsletter for the Holiday Networking Party, in December. There is no December newsletter, so please use this copy if you do not receive monthly email announcements from us.
In 2008, a new edition of ISO 9001 went into effect. The literature says the new version doesn’t introduce any new requirements but only clarifications to the existing requirements.
One of the clarifications involves the use of Outsourced Processes in the Quality Management System. The changes clarify the organization’s responsibility for conformity to all customer, regulatory, and statutory requirements. The changes reinforce the need for control over outsourced processes and recommend using the methods found in the ISO 9001 Purchasing clause. These changes also include suppliers who are part of the same parent organization, such as a separate department or division.
Please note our meeting location this month is at Bickford’s Grille, just off exit 36 on I-93 South.

President’s Message

Please take a look at our CPIM workshop schedule. Our Winter classes begin in January. Plan ahead! If you and your company are interested in hosting a workshop, please let us know.
We have also launched our APICS North Shore Chapter #20 Linked in group that we hope will be able to offer exclusive benefits and discussions for our members. One area we would like to see this group grow into is to become the site of first choice for our individual members and member companies to share professional job opportunities. We are also looking forward to the group helping us strengthen our relationships with our academic and student members, and to provide them with a link to our membership and member companies.
If you can help us make these possibilities become reality we would like to have you work with us in any size role. If you are a social networking site guru who can help us administer the group, or if you are interested in working with us as a Career Manager, or Co-Academic Liaison, please feel free to contact any one of us.
We look forward to another great year!
– Ken Duratti

(A) Let the project manager handle the problem and get the project back on schedule.
(B) Reschedule implementation efforts based on the resources currently available.
(C) Contract with an outside systems and consulting group to implement the system.
(D) Cancel the system implementation because it is adversely affecting product quality.
2. The primary difference between the program evaluation and review technique (PERT) and the critical path method (CPM) is that
(A) PERT can incorporate variances in the duration of an activity
(B) the duration of each activity is easier to determine using PERT
(C) PERT provides the ability to assess schedule-crashing opportunities
(D) PERT is better suited for progress reporting
3. Design for manufacturability is supposed to result in which of the following?
(A) improve product quality
(B) reduced training needs
(C) reduced product features
(D) delayed market introductions
4. Which of the following actions will most likely ensure end-user support for a new computerized information management system?

2.  Master Planning of Resources (MPR)
3.  Detailed Scheduling and Planning (DSP)
4.  Execution and Control of Operations (ECO)
