Preparing for a Role Play

When working as an observer or facilitator for a role play, you are paid one hour’s preparation time for every hour that you work. Please use this time to prepare by doing the following:

  • Read through the role plays to refresh your memory
  • Read through the ‘Notes for Observers’ (or if facilitating- ‘how to facilitate a role-play’)
  • Read through the key messages sheet- and highlight any you feel strongly about
  • Spend some time writing out these key issues in your own words
  • Think about how you will raise these key issues with the medical students and what you are looking for in the medical students
  • Think about any experiences you have had with medical professionals that relate to the key messages and how you might share these experiences in the role play discussion
  • Think about the key things you are observing in the medical students
  • Work through an ‘observation skills worksheet’ which can be downloaded on the website
  • Make sure you know where you are going, at what time and that you have the mobile number of the staff member you are meeting

When you attend the role play, it is your responsibility to bring with you:

  • Notes for observers/ facilitators and key messages that you can read in the briefing session before-hand
  • An observers feedback form for you to fill out during the session
  • An hours claim form, so that you get paid
  • An expenses claim form, for any travel costs
  • A role-play de-brief feedback form for Involvement workers- so that you can tell us how you thought it went
  • The mobile number of the staff member you are meeting and the venue details

All of these forms can be found in your handbook, when you are close to running out please contact a member of staff.
