Burmese Restaurants in the USA

Dear MEHS Alum,

We thought it might be useful to have a list of Burmese restaurants from various cities so that busy travelers would know where to find one when they are in that town.

PLEASE help us make this a useful list. I have started with the few that I know about.

Can you help me?RG Fuller, MEHS Science Master, 1959-61

Village Mingala
21 E 7th Street,
New York, NY 10003
Tel: 212-529-3656. / Comments: I think both these restaurants have the same Burmese ownership because the menus are identical. One can read reviews by searching under "Cafe Mingala NYC". The food is inexpensive, genuine and excellent. Unpretentious atmosphere, more like a cafe. Great takeaway service. Menu includes some Chinese dishes but the Burmese dishes are terrific. My favourites are the Mohinga, Khaushwe (on the menu as Coconut Chicken Noodle Soup) and Let-Hokes. RB
Rangoon Restaurant
112 N 9th St,
Philadelphia, PA
(215) 829-8939 / We have taken Americans to this restaurant to introduce them to Burmese food, especially Khaukswe. It was pretty good. The brother or cousin of this owner runs the Rangoon Restaurant in Palo Alto. RGF
Burma Restaurant

Washington, DC 20001
202-638-1280 / This one is a short walk from the Mall in DC and we have eaten here several times. The female owner taught at MEHS a few years after Mrs. Logie left. Last time we were there we did not think the food was a good as we remembered it from before, but we have always enjoyed going there. Her husband runs a Burmese restaurant in a nearby suburb. RGF
Mandalay Restaurant

Silver Spring, MD
301-585-0500. / Run by husband of owner of the Burma Restaurant in downtown DC. RGF
Good but not as authentic as the one in New York. RB
A Taste of Burma
126 Edds Lane (off Rt. 7)
(East of Sully Rd. & Hwy 7)
Sterling, VA 20165
703-444-8511 / We took our friends here for dinner in July, 2007. We thought the Khaukswe was a bit spicey. The green tea salad was very good and the Sanwin-Ma-Kin was excellent. The coconut rice and chicken curry tasted authentic to us. The young Burmese man from Rangoon serving us said his aunt owns the restaurant in Falls Church. RGF
Myanmar Restaurant
7810-C Lee Highway
Merrifalls Shopping Center
Falls Church, VA 22042 / We just did not have time to get there when we were in VA in the summer of 2006. RGF

General Comments:
We always order Ohn-no Khaukswe. That's the dish we use to measure how good the Burmese restaurant is. If available we like to order Sanwin-Ma-Kin for dessert. {We actually made this once from the Rangoon Methodist English Church cookbook. It turned out pretty good...only problem. The recipe said cook until done and neither one of us knew what it was supposed to look like when it was done! :-) } That is also a dish that can be used to measure the quality of the restaurant. We have had some pretty bad Sanwin-Ma-Kin! RGF
