PHYSICAL EDUCATION GUIDELINE

OBJECTIVES:

·  Promote physical fitness and wellness as a lifetime commitment.

·  Emphasize the skills, sportsmanship and teamwork involved in various sport activities.

·  Help each student realize that wellness is a lifetime responsibility.

·  Have fun!!

UNIFORMS:

Each student is required to “change and dress out” properly for each physical education class. This includes a designated Physical Education uniform, shoulder covering shirt; shorts extending to at least mid-thigh which can be brought from home (No “Soffe” type shorts for girls), athletic socks, and rubber soled running or training athletic shoes with tied laces. .

No street shoes, work boots, UGGS, flip flops, loafers, house slippers or foot wear of similar nature are to be worn for class. Spaghetti strap attire, sleeveless tank tops, shirts with shoulders that have been cut out is not acceptable unless the student is wearing a full shouldered shirt under the garment. Shorts must fit properly and be worn above the hips.

Students not dressing out in the proper uniform lose points from their daily grade. (SOL 9.4, 10.4)

LOCKS AND LOCKERS:

·  The Physical Education department provides each student with a combination lock and a small gym locker.

·  Locks left on the long lockers will be taken off, after an initial warning is issued. The Physical Education staff will not be responsible for its contents.

·  Lost locks should be reported to the teacher and a new lock will be issued. Replacement cost for a lost lock is $5.00.

·  Locks from home may not be used.

·  Students are to secure their valuables in their hall locker prior to coming to physical education class.

GYM PROCEEDURES AND REGULATIONS:

§  All students will report to the locker room and change before entering the gym. After dressing for class activity, students report to the gym and obtain their attendance card. The student will give their card to their PE teacher. DO NOT GIVE THE TEACHER ANYONE ELSES CARD ALONG WITH YOURS.

§  At the end of class, students, after changing out of their PE uniforms will meet in the Main gym until the bell rings or an instructor dismisses them.

§  It is strongly encouraged not to bring large items to PE that will not fit in your PE locker (backpacks, instruments, etc.). NO BACK PACKS IN THE GYM DURING CLASS TIME.

§  Students are not permitted in the Varsity Team room during the school day. These areas are to be locked and athletes should keep all PE items in their PE locker.

·  NO GUM, JEWELERY, FOOD OR DRINKS IN OR AROUND THE GYM!!!

·  Students are not permitted to use any Physical Education equipment unless authorized and supervised.

·  All rules in the student handbook are in effect in the gym.

·  There should be no horseplay or running in the locker rooms.

DOCTORS NOTES AND EXCUSES:

·  The Virginia Board of Education requires an instructional program of physical education which corresponds to the Standards of Accreditation (Standard: 8 VAC 20-131-80) for all students.

·  A student may be excused from physical education activity by a parent or guardian for no more than one week (3 consecutive classes) per quarter.

·  A doctor’s note must be presented to the physical education teacher for any period beyond one week.

·  The doctor will be requested to fill out a checklist of appropriate activities that the student may take part in while recovering from the illness or injury.

·  If a student cannot participate in a general physical education program, the student may be assessed for an adapted physical education program to meet the requirements set by the state.

HEALTH AND DRIVER EDUCATION

·  Health and Driver Education grades are determined by the points a student earns on tests, quizzes, projects and homework and is divided into the possible number of points that can be earned each quarter.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION GRADING SYSTEM:

·  Ninth grade Physical Education is a combination of a classroom Health grade and a Physical Education grade.

·  The tenth grade receives separate grades for Driver Education and the Physical Education grade is a combination of the Driver Ed. grade the PE grade the first semester and the Health grade and PE grade the second semester.

·  Physical Education grading system is as follows:

·  The student will be evaluated daily while in PE by the use of a standard based rubric that is available to be view on our department web page. There will be a link in the narrative portion in clarity that will take you to the web page. A student may receive up to 20 points a day.

·  A student who is absent more than twice (2) in a quarter will be required to make up his/her class during their study hall.
