BRIEFING NOTE

Brief description of the organisation, including past developments and successes

The Whiteinch Centre

The Whiteinch Centre was opened in 2006 as a community facility operating as a social enterprise, owned by the local people and managed by Whiteinch Centre Limited on their behalf. It provides a range of essential services and activities aimed at improving health and increasing learning opportunities. The Centre provides a vibrant and inclusive environment at the heart of the local community. It is open seven days per week, daytime and evenings. More details are available at www.whiteinchcentre.org.uk.

Around 60 groups provide services from the Centre on a weekly basis. These include:

·  Health services offered through the NHS, including breastfeeding and weaning support, smoking cessation, healthy living and mental health activities

·  Addictions support from 16 anonymous groups meeting every week (Alcohol, Drug and Overeating addictions)

·  Stress relief from alternative therapies provided by Lifelink, an organisation providing services across Glasgow which helps to improve the emotional, mental and physical wellbeing of people of all ages

·  Youth activities offered through DRC Youth Project

·  Leisure activities including dance, football, boxing, karate and yoga

·  Classes in a range of subjects offered by sessional tutors, Glasgow Clyde College, Glasgow University and Glasgow Life

·  A community café offering affordable healthy options and a place for all ages to meet socially

In addition, the Centre has recently launched its own After School Club, registered with Care Inspectorate. This is a new and exciting venture for the organisation which is currently recruiting staff to allow it to grow as a business.

We have 900 local people accessing services per week, and 2500 attending events in the Centre per year. The Centre plays a vital role in reducing isolation and encouraging local people to access new activities and services in a supportive environment. The Centre benefits from financial, HRM and other support services provided by Whiteinch & Scotstoun Housing Association Ltd.
