Total Points available 108.

40 for Walking.

26 for Menus and Meal Preparation

12 for Campsite

15 for Teamwork

15 for Logbooks

Walking

Up to 40 points will be available for the actual hike and route planning, this will be based on successful completion of route cards, map reading skills, following the route, walking at a sensible pace, etc. It is not a race and the fastest team will not necessarily win.

All teams start with full marks and lose points for having bags taken, being picked up by bus, coming in to checkpoints from wrong direction, etc.

Menus and Meal Preparation

The three meals that we see being prepared – Evening meal and two Breakfasts need to be:-

Balanced - High in Carbohydrates (from pasta, rice, potato, cereals and bread)

Also containing Protein (from meat, fish, beans, cheese)

And low in sugars (from fruit, cake, chocolate)

(4pts for each meal)

Comfortable - Not hungry, warm.

(2pts for each meal)

Equipment - Suitable for job ie. Trangia with meths

Able to use it

(2pts marked on Saturday morning, checked on Sunday)

Hygienic - As far as camp allows!

Washing equipment and hands properly in hot soapy water

Keeping raw and cooked foods separate

(2pts for each meal)

Campsite

Equipment - Available (from troop beforehand (2pts)

Serviceable (able to do job, no bits missing) (4pts)

Team know how to use it/ put it up (2pts)

Site - Clean and tidy throughout camp. (2pts)

Clear on first inspection (2pts)

Teamwork

Walking at pace of slowest and arrive together

Well behaved

Happy amongst selves, not arguing

Marked at each c/point 1 point lost for each “no”.

Logbooks

Maximum of 15 points awarded by independent adjudicator based on following criteria given in the hints and tips sheet supplied with logbooks at start of hike.

1.  Introduce your team with a few sentences about each member, their families and their hobbies. Do not include your surnames.

2.  Itemise your team kit list.

3.  Itemise your personal kit list.

4.  Give your complete menu for the hikes.

5.  Draw a map of the first day’s route.

6.  Insert all grid references and timings for the first day’s route. (Will be on route card)

7.  Write an interesting account of your hike, drawing pictures of any interesting landmarks, buildings or even scenic views.

8.  Draw a picture of the campsite and give a general description of your surroundings.

9.  Draw a map of the second day’s route.

10. Insert all grid references and timings for the second day’s route. (Will be on route card)

11. Write an interesting account of the second days hike drawing diagrams and pictures where possible.

Nothing should be completed beforehand and inserted into log but should be written in during the hike and in the evenings.

Hints 6 &10 will be on the route cards and can be copied directly.

Hints 7 & 11 carry the most points so should contain the most information.
