Book of Deuteronomy

Chapter 30

This chapter deals with the subject of love and obedience and how God will restore His people after a time of rebellion.

1. The need for restoration (vs. 1)

God knew that His people would turn away from Him and that He would have to punish them and that He would restore them. Notice the word “all.” God knows all things. The disobedience of Israel and God’s punishment in scattering them are not the end of the story. This chapter looks beyond to a time of restoration.

2. The requirements for restoration (vs. 2)

They must choose to return and obey all of God’s commandments with all of their heart and soul. This would be a total dedication.

3. The blessings of restoration (vs. 3-9)

A.  God will gather them back in the land (vs. 3-5) – This was fulfilled in part when some of the Jews returned from Babylon under the leadership of Ezra and Nehemiah. A complete fulfillment is yet to happen in the future.

B.  God will multiply them (vs. 5) – This was one of God’s promises to Abraham in Genesis 15:5 And he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able to number them: and he said unto him, So shall thy seed be.

C.  God will change their hearts (vs. 6) – God does this in our hearts today. The heart of all spiritual victory is in the heart of man. See Jer. 24:7; 31:31-33.

D.  God will punish their enemies (vs. 7) – The people who fight against Israel are actually fighting against God (in fulfillment of Gen. 12:3).

E.  God will give them a desire to obey (vs. 8) God does the same for us today.

Philippians 2:12-13 Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.

F.  God will make them fruitful (vs. 9)

4. The challenge of restoration (vs. 10-20)

A.  God’s commandments are clear (vs. 11-14) – God’s commands are not hidden or complicated or out of reach. Israel can’t plead ignorance. Obedience is easy for those who want to do God’s will. Paul used this passage and applied it to receiving the Gospel in Romans 10:6-8 But the righteousness which is of faith speaketh on this wise, Say not in thine heart, Who shall ascend into heaven? (that is, to bring Christ down from above:) Or, Who shall descend into the deep? (that is, to bring up Christ again from the dead.) But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach; (See Deuteronomy 29:29.)

B.  God’s choice is clear (vs. 15-20) – It was a simple choice. It wasn’t hard to figure this out. Notice the emphasis on “this day” (today). A choice between two options. It was a serious choice, life or death. Heaven and earth are witnesses of their solemn choice (vs. 19). This means that both God and man were witnesses to this solemn decision. Every generation make a choice that affects the next generation (vs. 19). These are the same choices people face today. We find a parallel in John 3:16-18 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
