Brief Course Description:

French 3 Honorsis a course which refines and expands the writing and speaking skills acquired in French 2. Vocabulary expansion includes personal identification, traveling, shopping, pastimes, house and furnishings. Grammar will focus on the conjugation in the following tenses: present, past, future, conditional, and subjunctive. In addition, the following grammatical concepts will be introduced: object pronouns, formation of adjectives and adverbs, the comparative and superlative, possessive and demonstrative adjectives. Through the study of these topics, students will review and expand their knowledge of French grammar and conjugation. Reading materials will include information on the culture, history, art, and literature of France and other parts of the French-speaking world. Students will also refine their writing skills through the editing of short essays, referred to as “compositions.”

It is recommended students keep their homework, worksheets, grammar notes & vocabulary sheets in a 3-ring binder.

Students will need to have a French-English dictionary for use in class and at home.

Evaluation:

Evaluation will take place in the following areas: listening, speaking, writing, and reading. Evaluation will be planned regularly: tests (60-80 pts), quizzes (20-45 pts), oral presentations (25-50 pts, individual and/or in pairs), research /cultural projects (50 pts), homework (equivalent to one unit test grade) (65 pts, 5 pts per assignment), participation in French (45 pts per marking period). No late homework will be accepted for credit.

If a student was in class the day a quiz/test was announced, the student will be expected to take it if in school the day it is given, even if absent the day before. Please contact me via email prior to class for other considerations:

Class Attendance/Absence:

  • Be in class on time. “On time” means you are in your seat when the bell rings.
  • Rather than ask me at the beginning of class, it is recommended that you check our class website, (password: stoga) to see what classwork/homework you missed during your absence. Students are expected to make up missed work according to school policy (2 days/day of absence). Tests/quizzes are to be made up in room 294.

Class Participation and Conduct:

Class participation includes: prompt arrival in class, readiness for class to begin (books and supplies in hand), completion of individual and group activities in class, respect and courtesy given to teacher and classmates during class , and an overall positive contribution to the class progress. Students are expected to use French as often as possible.

School wide cut policy:

Students who cut a class will receive a marking period grade reduction of ten percentage points. Students who cut a second time will receive a marking period grade of 50%.

Extra Help:

Students are encouraged to seek extra help from the teacher after school or with Mme Gibbard (room 294) during the school day. Appointments must be made in advanced.
