Use this two-page check sheet if you are applying to any of the following programs:

  • MA in English with a specialization in English Teaching (online)
  • MA in English with a specialization in Professional Writing and Rhetoric (online)
  • MA in English, individualized track (online or blended)

1. Primary Application, completed online / sent to BGSU's Graduate College.

Primary application documents (official transcripts and standardized test scores) should be sent to:

☐Fill out the online applicationfor BGSU Graduate College’s, available from this page: .

  • Within that online application, there is a page entitled "Enrollment Options."
  • On the "Enrollment Options" page, choose "Fall" for the semester in which you wish to begin.
  • Under "Select my area of study," be sure to choose the program to which you are applying:
  • For the MA in English with a specialization in English Teaching, choose English: English Teaching Specialization– MA (Online Program);
  • For the MA in English with a specialization in Professional Writing and Rhetoric, choose English: Professional Writing and Rhetoric Specialization– MA (Online Program);
  • For the MA in English, individualized track, choose either English: Individualized Track – MA (Online Program) or English: Individualized Track – MA (Face to Face or Blended Program) depending on whether you plan to take courses entirely online or a mixture of online and face-to-face. (If you are not certain now just choose one; you can change your official program at a later date.)

☐Pay the application fee ($45, $75 for international students).

☐Submit your official transcripts (one copy from each college) to BGSU’s Graduate Admissions at the address above.

☐Submit a standardized test score. Exam scores must be sent from the testing service directly to BGSU's Graduate Admissions at the address above. We requireoneof the following exams:

  • GRE General Exam;
  • Praxis Exam II. We accept any one of the following: 0041 English Language, Literature, and Composition; 0049 Middle School English Language Arts; 5039 English Language Arts: Content and Analysis; 5044 English Language, Literature, and Composition: Content and Analysis;
  • Ohio Assessments of Educators (OAE) English Language Arts 020 exam;
  • Another state-approved teacher licensure exam in the English or Language Arts field. Prior approval for any other test must be given by the English Department Graduate Coordinator. See our program website application page and FAQ page for details.

☐For applicants whose first language is not English: Submit TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or IELTS (International English Language Testing System) scores. Exam scores must be sent from the testing service directly to BGSU's Graduate Admissions at the address above.

2. Secondary Application, sent to BGSU’sDepartment of English.

All parts of the secondary application (statement of purpose, critical writing sample, and letters of recommendation) should be sent to:

☐Statement of Purpose (2 pages double spaced; include the specialization to which you are applying: English Teaching, Professional Writing and Rhetoric, or Individualized).

☐Critical Writing Sample (roughly 15 pages; can be two or more pieces if you don’t have a single piece of that length).

☐Letter of recommendation 1 (academic and/or professional) from ______, sent directly from recommender to Department of English.

☐Letter of recommendation 2 (academic and/or professional) from ______, sent directly from recommender to Department of English.

☐Letter of recommendation 3 (academic and/or professional) from ______, sent directly from recommender to Department of English.

Important note about letters of recommendation:It is the applicant's responsibility to solicit recommendations from three recommenders. The applicant should ask each recommender to mail a letter of recommendation (in hard copy) directly to the Department of English at the East Hall address listed above. The letters of recommendation should not be sent by the applicant.
