This activity has been designed by your Sixth Form Subject Tutors in order to support you in making the transition between GCSE andA level studies.

The Holgate academy A level photography course has been designs to inspire and develop your creativity and skill within the subject. In order to prepare you for your studies next year we would like you to get a little insight into the course by collecting some of your own photographs and investigating some key photographers.

Before the start of term you should:

Task 1: Collect up to 20 photographs on a location in the UK or abroad focussing on colour and details. Bring your photos in on a USB for your first lesson. (If you have your own camera please use this, if not a mobile phone will be fine for your initial shots)

Task 2: Being able to write about Photography is equally as important as being able to visually draw from observation. You will be expected to be able to both analyse your own work as well as photographer’s work both practically and through written analysis.

Choose one of the following artists to research.

  • Bruce Davidson (NY Subway Series)
  • Man Ray
  • Henk Van Rensbergen (Abandoned Places)
  • Lee Jeffries (Homeless portraiture)

In order to support you with analysis please see the attached support sheet in order to guide you with writing about the work of others using key words and technical terms.

Your analysis is mainly about your opinion of the work and how you interpret the visual elements within the images.
