Be an Architect! –Task 4

Task 4:

You will need:

-calculator

-graph paper

-ruler

Instructions:

A)  Using graph paper, draw a blueprint of your dream house (at least 1 floor of it). Label each room, and provide each room’s dimensions. For a rectangle or square, you would need the length and width of the room. For any curve, you would need the radius / diameter. And for a composite shape, you would need the length of each side composing the room.

You must include at LEAST each of the following. Check them off to keep track of what you have completed.

1 bathroom
1 bedroom
2 closets
2 composite shapes
2 curved walls
1 hallway
1 kitchen
1 laundry room
1 living room AND 1 dining room
or
1 living room with a dining area
1 special floorplan feature

B)  Creating a blueprint is not as easy as it sounds. There are MANY things to consider. In order to ensure that your blueprint makes sense, take some time to answer the questions below. Adjust your blueprint as necessary and be sure to ask for clarification when necessary. If you need to look up blueprints or typical room dimensions, feel free to do so. However, if you are caught doing anything else on your device, you will lose the privilege of using it in class for this purpose.

1.  How big of a family do you want? Will each person have their own room or will they share rooms?

2.  What occupation do you plan on having? This is important to consider, because you might not be able to afford everything you want! Pools, bathrooms, and kitchens can all be very expensive! Do you think your house would be affordable?

3.  What type of measurements should you be using? Inches? Feet? Yards? Why?

4.  Not all room placements make sense. For example, do you want your laundry room next to your bathroom? Should your bedroom connect to the back porch? What are some placements that you would probably avoid, and why?

5.  Do you want small or big bathrooms? bedrooms? etc? Research the sizes of typical bedrooms and bathrooms. You can either go home and measure a few rooms, or perhaps look at a few ads for apartments and homes for rent / sale. Share what you have discovered.

6.  How do you want to furnish your rooms? This is important, because your dimensions must be big enough to include your furniture!

7.  Do your dimensions make sense? In other words, if one wall is 20 feet long, is the wall opposite of it also 20 feet long?

8.  After seeing some of your peer’s ideas, are there a few things you would also like to include in your house?

9.  What else should you probably think about when designing your dream home?

10.  What kinds of rooms and/or features would include a curved wall or use a composite shape?

C)  Find the area and perimeter of each room and hallway that were necessary for part A. (Do not worry about extra rooms you included.) Show your work below in a neat and organized manner.

Do not forget to include your units!
