Basic Art Lesson 7

Ancient Greek Standards

Ancient Greeks used the Golden mean for drawing figures  the ratio of a smaller part of an artwork to the larger part is approximately 3:5

-The ratio of the larger part to the sum of both parts is also 3:5

-A typical male figure is seven-and-a-half-heads tall

-Eyes: halfway between chin and top of head

-Nose: halfway between chin and eyes

-Lips: halfway between chin and nose

Exercise: Draw a male face using the Greek standards for a face. Make sure to label the standard for eyes, nose and lips.

Oils:Oil-based, Glazes: transparent, thinned oils, Slow drying time

Watercolor:Water-based, Transparent: Washes: diluted, lighter

Gouache: Water-based, Opaque: Undiluted, not transparent, Dries faster than watercolor, Creates precise details

Tempera:Water-based, easily thinned and cannot mix; limited range of hues. Also dries quickly

Acrylic: Invented after WWII; most recent, made of synthetic materials: plastics,Polymers, Water-resistant if dried, Popular media for murals

Exercise: In each of the situations below, use your expert artistic advice to recommend the type of media the painter should use. THEN, give your reasoning behind your recommendation.

  2. Binder: Substances that synthesize pigments; fixatives prevent paint from smearing
  3. Solvent: Thickens or thins paint; increases or decreases drying time; turpentine is a solvent used in oil painting

Exercise: In the space below, create a flow map on “How to create a Paint.” The flow map should be detailed, accurate, have at least 5 steps, and be colorful!
