--Have students review all of the pages in theme book they have read thus far, looking for the phrases in italics. --Have students explain the purpose of the italics. --Every time the main character is thinking about something that is not shared with the other characters, his thoughts are expressed in italics. In drama, the actor looks directly at the audience to tell them what he or she is thinking. This dramatic technique is called aside. --Have students practice reading aloud the asides in Shepherd Warrior. They should look like they are thinking or cup their hands by their mouths.
