BARKLEY, Roy ‘Don’ was born October 8, 1928 at Winona Shannon Co MO, the son of John William ‘J. W.’ BARKLEY & Esther Olive HARROD. He died July 31, 1982, enroute to a hospital in Poplar Bluff on highway 60 in Carter Co MO, of a gunshot wound inflicted at his home in Fremont Carter Co MO. On October 23, 1948, Don was united in marriage to Mrs. Lois Oneda CAMPBELL DOWNS at Salem Fulton Co AR, and to this union four children were born, Donita, Johnny, Terry & Gary. Lois brought to the marriage an infant son, Billy Joe DOWNS. Don was of the Christian faith, having accepted Jesus as his Lord at a young age, and later placing fellowship with a Pentecostal church in Fremont. Don and Lois divorced in 1967 and he married Mary Beth HOAGLAND of Fremont Carter Co MO. She had a son, Tod HOAGLAND. Don and Mary Beth later divorced and she remarried and had a daughter, Virginia KELLY; Don & Mary Beth married a second time, and he adopted her children, Tod and Virginia. He attended college in Columbia Boone Co MO for a short time following a tour of duty in the U. S. Army, serving in Korea. He began an apprenticeship with Horner NORTON as a carpenter and building contractor, and thus began a career of many years building homes, apartments and commercial buildings all over the state of Missouri. He influenced his brother Larry in choosing this as his own line of work. His greatest passion, however, was working with livestock and he spent most of his later years buying and selling cattle, hogs and horses in Missouri and Arkansas. He also learned the art of auctioneering from his father, and conducted numerous home and farm auctions in Shannon and surrounding counties. His brother Max also followed these professions. Don liked to sing and dance, and was very social. He had a charismatic personality and made countless friends and acquaintances throughout his lifetime. He was interested in American History and in politics, and even campaigned for sheriff of ShannonCounty at one time. He enjoyed reading detective and western novels. Don also liked to hunt and fish, and spent most of his time out doors. His nicknames were ‘Slick’, given him by Lois’s uncle Bernie NORRIS, and ‘Jeeter’, from a character in the movie Tobacco Road, given him by his stepson Billy Joe DOWNS. Don was preceded in death by his father in 1975, sister Lillian in 1942, and brother Bill in 1960. He is survived by his former wife, Lois BARKLEY of Winona, and children and spouses, Donita SIMPSON HERBST and Steve, Cartersville GA; Johnny BARKLEY and Vicki PARTRIDGE, Winona; Terry BARKLEY and Reta BRADLEY, Birch Tree; Gary BARKLEY and Shirley BLAND BRAWLEY, Winona; and stepson Billy Joe DOWNS, Winona. Also surviving are his mother, Esther BARKLEY, Winona; sisters and spouses, Norrine NORRIS and Brownie, Winona; Jennie SHARP PREWETT, St. Louis; and Shannon GOLDBERG, Creve Coeur; brothers and spouses, Max BARKLEY and Lola FANSLER; and Larry BARKLEY and Marguerite SCOVILLE; grandchildren Jay SIMPSON, Wesley HERBST, Jessica and Amanda BARKLEY, April BARKLEY, Adam and Jared BARKLEY, and step-grandsons Donnie and Brian DOWNS; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and a great many friends. Funeral services were held at the Duncan Chapel in Winona with burial at the SniderCemetery in Fremont Carter Co MO. Arrangements were under the direction of the Duncan Funeral Home of Winona Shannon Co MO. [This obituary replaces the one written at the time of his death which is incorrect, in part.]
