Motor Skill Competence – Skill Cues, Tactics, or Performance Outcomes
Advanced (4) / Proficient (3) / Basic (2) / Below Basic (0)
1. Skill Cues -
Overhead Clear
[1] / “Shake hands” grip,Pivot,Point,Prepare(racket held high, free arm points to shuttle, feet back pedal, push off back foot)Racket head accelerates up, wrist snap, aim high to rear court, follow through across body. / Inconsistency due to late preparation resulting in contacting shuttle behind head. / Hits shuttle high
but poor positioning and weak acceleration of racket head does not result in shuttle reaching rear of court. / No attempt to prepare early. No accelerationof racket head. Shuttle lands close to net.
2. Skill Cues -
Overhead Drop
[1] / Same grip and preparation as the Overhead Clear to disguise the shot. Racket head slows just before contact, “soft hands”, steep wrist drop, smooth continuous follow through across body, shuttle lands in forecourt / Inconsistency due to late preparation and “stiff” grip / Shuttle does not drop steeply in forecourt due to “stiff” grip and poor use of wrist to drop racket head / No attempt to prepare early. Racket face is open resulting in shuttle landing past service line. No use of wrist
3. Skill Cues -
Overhead Smash
[1] / Same grip and preparation as Overhead Clear and Drop to disguise the shot. Free arm points at shuttle out ahead, Jump in air to improve angle, racket head accelerates with fast wrist snap bringing shuttle down with speed, follow through across body / Inconsistency due to not getting behind shuttle and striking it out ahead. / Shuttle is hit with speed but no angle(no jump) / Poor preparation. Shuttle hit from behind head with a slow swing and no wrist snap
4. Skill Cues -
Backhand Underarm Clear
[1] / Elbow points to shuttle, racket head drops, dominant foot forward, accelerate racket head with strong wrist snap and follow through high / Inconsistency due to poor positioning / Shuttle moves from low to high but not to back of court due to slow racket head speed and weak wrist snap / Poor preparation with no turn. Racket head swings slowly with no low to high action
5. Skill Cues -
Low Forehand Serve
[1] / Shake hands grip. Stands at a diagonal giant stride from “T” ¼ turn, hold shuttle by cork, racket swings from below waist, “Drop-Pause-Swing”,weight shifts back to front foot, contact below waist, follow through to target / Inconsistency due to not following through to target / Body position too square to net causing shuttle to loft in to the air / Fails to strike shuttle
6. Skill Cues -
Low Backhand Serve
[1] / Thumb and fingers grip, stand a diagonal giant stride from the “T” either with feet side to side or 1 foot forward, hold shuttle by feathers, racket swings through to target making contact below the waist / Inconsistency due to not following through to target / Fails to strike shuttle below waist / Fails to strike shuttle
7. Tactic -
Using clears/drops to move opponent and create open space
[1] / Consistently uses Clears and Drops to move opponent forward and back to create open space. Re-positions to the center of the court after each shot / Moves opponent out of position with Clears and Drops but does not return to center of court after each shot / Can move opponent slightly out of position with Clears and Drops but does not create enough open space to hit a winner / Fails to create an open space by moving opponent forward and back.
8.Performance Outcome -
Overhead Clear
[1] / Consistently hits the clear high to the back of the court and can vary the direction / Hits the clear high to the back of the court but is inconsistent with changing shuttle direction / Hits the clear high to the back of the court but cannot vary the direction of the shuttle / Fails to hit the clear to the back of the court
