ASG Senate Bill No. 10

Author(s): Senator Abel Soster, Senator Nathan Smith

Sponsor(s): Senator Michael Cobb

Bill to Allocate Funds for the William Christian Doerhoff Memorial Foundation Workshop

Whereas,The Good Samaritan Overdose Prevention Resolution sets a precedent for how the Associated Student Government stands in regards to reaching out to students afraid to seek help as they struggle with the use of narcotics and other illegal drugs. By leading the charge against substance abuse and illegal drug use, the Associated Student Government at the University of Arkansas has the chance to lead a paradigm shift to protect students from the dangers of drug use; and

Whereas,The William Christian Doerhoff Memorial Foundation started earlier this year to increase student awareness of the effects drug abuse can bring, and to stress the importance among students to “speak up and speak out” when they know a friend or peer is involved in prescription drug and illegal substance abuse. The foundation is named in memoriam of a former student of the University of Arkansas who lacked the resources and awareness necessary to prevent the effects of substance abuse; and

Whereas,The William Christian Doerhoff Foundation will be holding a workshop at the Arkansas Union from 6-8 the evening of March 9th. The workshop is projected to attract over 100 students. By being the first movers in the culture change on drug abuse at the University of Arkansas, the Associated Student Government has the opportunity to be a sponsor for the event and promote attendance to the workshop by providing food at the event; and

Be it therefore resolved:That the Associated Student Government Senate allocate a total of $500 from the (LS-Prog) budget in order to provide catering by Chartwell’s at the William Christian Doerhoff Memorial Foundation workshop in the Arkansas Union Theater on March 9th; and

Be it further resolved:Food will be bought for the workshop because the event will run through dinnertime for most students in attendance, and food provided by the Associated Student Government at this event will help raise attendance at the event; and

Be it further resolved:Raising attendance at this workshop will help the Associated Student Government Senate in achieving the goals listed in the Good Samaritan Drug Overdose Prevention Resolution;

Be it further resolved:Any of the allocated funds not used, be

returned to the Associated Student

Government Senate allocations budget

(LS-Prog).
