AUGUST BILLIARD CLUB NEWS

A few months ago I came to the membership with an idea of having our own billiards club shirts. The idea didn’t go over too well because it was winter and short sleeve shirts were the farthest things from anyone’s mind. So, I waited until the weather got warmer and the idea of club shirts was much better accepted. I contacted NJLOGOWEAR in Manahawkin and we started on the project. Before long I had come up with the logo for the shirts and picked out the color. As you can see from the picture we all have our shirts and enjoy wearing them. Many thanks go out to my wife Pattie for helping with the planning and distribution of the shirts.

Everyone who lives here knows that Greenbriar is much more than a community; it’s a place where we look out for each other and care for each other like family. This point was proven over and over again these past few months when some of our members came down with serious health problems. It’s a blessing to know that when you need your neighbors the most that’s when they’ll be there for you at a moment’s notice…dropping what they were doing to come to the assistance of someone in need.

This past tournament’s game was 8ball with a handicap in place to level the playing field for all of our members. The division finalists were Jack Failla-Division 1, Mieke Closs-Division 2, Ron Schmidt-Division 3 and Roy Tanner-Division 4. The first play-off game placed Mieke against Ron. Ron is one of the club’s original members. The best of five match was refereed by Jim Morrissey. Mieke won the match up. The next play-off game was Jack against Roy. This game was a really a nail biter. This match was refereed by Joe Grubowski. Jack is without doubt the best player in our club while Roy who has only been playing pool with us for a year and a half and has already won three division championships. This was a best out of five play-off seriesand at one point the score was tied, we all held our breath as the final match was played. Both Roy and Jack made some great shots and in the end Jack’s expertise won over Roy.

The championship game placed Mieke against Jack and the best of five match-up was once again refereed by Jim Morrissey. This was a great match to watch as both players really know their way around a pool table. If you happened to past by the pool room that night you were sure to hear some cheering, “nice shot” and all of the guys watching each game intently while enjoying their snacks and soda. Once again Jack’s fantastic shooting won the game over Mieke. After the match was over we went to the Arts and Crafts room and enjoyed pizza and chicken wings.

One our members; Andy Christelles makes sure that every division winner gets a personalized photo plaque engraved to them to memorialize their efforts. He also provides a fantastic engraved trophy for the champion. What a wonder effort on his part!

Many thanks to Paul Forte for planning the festivities for the championship play-off night, Don Hatch for making sure that all of the house sticks are in perfect shape, Joe Grubowski who provides us with great music every night and to Ron Trinder our wonderful tournament coordinator for keeping all of the player’s scores down to the percent each and every week. The 8ball Billiards Club wouldn’t be the same without them!
