Anne Kreder (Treasurer): Anne reported that this month the deposit to the Stueckle Sky center was paid for next year’s Gala and a few other payments were made. Anne is still waiting for final numbers from the on-line auction.
There are also a few outstanding grants remaining:
The Library is $200 short and was hoping to use funds from last year’s grant to make up the difference. Anne explained that grant funds are available only on an annual basis, so that any funds not used last year were returned to the Brave Parent organization. Anne went on to say that Ms. Tourangeau will need to cut back on some books from her list to fit within the granted funds she has available.
The Volleyball Net System has not yet been purchased. Amy Kohlmeier confirmed that Rachel Ryden will continue teaching P.E. here at Boise High, but has resigned as Head Volleyball Coach moving forward.
The Band Podium Mr. Clements requested has not been ordered.
Carol Hembree will check in with these outstanding grant recipients. April 24 is the deadline for using granted funds.
Principal’s Report
Amy Kohlmeier (Principal): Thanks to everyone for all the support for the levy passing. Amy can now move forward planning for staff and classrooms for next year. Math and Science enrollment is up so she can now adjust for this need. Also, Amy thanked everyone for the effort with the online auction.
April 18th is approaching – SAT Day. There has been lots of planning for this important day. Michelle Tinker is asking for donations for the ISAT & SAT testing. Juice boxes, granola bars and healthy snacks were requested and depending on what donations show up by the 16th, the school will then go out and purchase whatever additional snacks are needed.
The scheduled May 11 Late Start has been cancelled. Next year there will be no more late start days, as collaboration will happen weekly at lunch on Thursday’s for 45 minutes.
Amy went on to report that three students were sent to the Idaho Drug Free Youth Symposium. The group spent a few days in McCall learning to promote healthy relationships and a drug free culture. The goal is to add students to this program and get them involved in intramurals and other activities. To get involved in this program, our social worker contacted faculty to help identify students to invite. This program helps to educate students on where to find drug free activities and how to get involved. Boise High has had minimal involvement with this group in the past, but Amy is working to increase the number of students participating.
AP tests are up by 100 tests this year. Boise High is giving 1556 AP tests to 561 students. Rosa Wolfe is receiving a National Award at Carnegie Hall for a young writer, which is very prestigious and we are all very proud of Rosa.
28 teachers have joined a faculty book club and are reading a book called Brain Rules, by John Medina. The staff is meeting to discuss how to incorporate what they are learning into their teaching. The book talks about how important exercise is to learning. It is humorous and educational.
Amy is finalizing the Wise Plan that is due tomorrow.
Faculty Report
Stephanie Keeney (Faculty Liaison): The Talent show before Spring Break was really great. Pay attention to announcements this time of year as tryouts for cheer, choir, class officers etc. are all happening now. There is a Character Education meeting on April 12th. Seniors went to the feeder Junior High Students (freshman) and gave presentations regarding Character Ed., honor code, block schedule and answered questions that incoming 10th graders had about Boise High. Amy Kohlmeier added that there is a 9th grade dance coming up on April 20th for incoming sophomores from North, Hillside and any open enrolling students as well.
The Drama presentation starts this Thursday.
Committee Reports
Colleen Fletcher (Activities Liaison): Spring trips for Band and Orchestra are coming up. Band has a concert coming up.
Carol Hembree(Fundraising): Carol reported for Dee Koeger who was unable to attend today’s meeting. Carol reported that the funds raised from the online auction items totaled: $6,781.50, less 11% ($745.97) to Auction Frogs totaling: $6,035.53. Adding to that BUY IT NOW items totaling $550 and FUND A NEED items totaling $2,565 our net grand total raised was $9,150.53. For a first time effort, these results were outstanding. Please thank Dee for all her efforts with this successful event. There was a brief discussion about how few parents knew about the online auction, as not all families receive the Brave Weekly which was the main source of promotion using email blasts for this event. Suzanne Hughes suggested using the phone call system already in place next year to promote the online fundraiser.
Brave Weekly (Molly Mannschreck): After many years of experience, Molly recommended sending the Brave Weekly automatically to 9th graders to get the “captive audience” at the Junior High level so they are already on the list when they start in 10th grade. Many students in 10th grade register alone, without a parent, so getting their parent’s email address at registration for the Brave Weekly is many times not achievable. Amy added that Infinite Campus is not reliable for email addresses as there are many duplicates and incorrect entries.
Anne Kreder suggested taking advantage of a mid-year event/activity that brings parents to the school to announce events that occur in the spring. There seems to be a disconnect with parents and communication during the second half of the school year. Amy pointed out that only 50 parents show up for our annual College Night, as an example. Any publicity Brave Parents can receive for items granted ie: athletic equipment, Brave Weekly, Band equipment, classroom clickers etc. is valuable. Teachers and coaches who make a point of thanking the Brave Parents when the opportunity arises are making the biggest difference for future fundraising. Hopefully our new website, face book page, banners and membership materials will all make a difference in getting the word out about what we do.
Carol Hembree (Vice President): Carol discussed board positions still needed for next year. The main position still needed is a fundraising chair.
Connie Simpson – Character Ed.
Barb Egland – Career Panel for next year
Sally and Page Davey – Hospitality
Wendi Pennington – Looking for a male counterpart for Athletic Liaison
Gail Inch – Secretary
Molly Mannschreck/Shirley O’Neil – Brave Weekly
Colleen Fletcher – still looking for a replacement for Activities Chair
Robin Ivanoff – Membership – taking over for Shannon Yochum (moving to Seattle)
Anne Kreder – Cyndi Eloyfson will take a bigger role as Co-Treasurer next year as long as her child does get open enrollment admission. Amy Kohlmeier brought up that open enrollment acceptances will be mailed between May 15 – June 15.
Sally Davey (Hospitality): Sally inquired about the date for the year-end teacher appreciation luncheon. After discussion, it was determined that the luncheon would be held Wednesday, May 30th at 12:15pm in the cafeteria.
Carol announced that the Annual Board luncheon is scheduled for May 11 at the Cottonwood Grill.
The Senior Awards Ceremony is scheduled for May 14th at 7pm. At this event Boise High specific scholarships are awarded, departments honor certain seniors, military appointments are announced and corporate scholarships to employee children are awarded.
The Awards Assembly, that occurs during the school day is more informal and honors groups. For example: National Honor Society, GPA over 3.8 students etc. This is the event where the students recognized receive flowers that Suzanne Hughes coordinates.
Meeting adjourned at 4:10pm.
Respectfully submitted by Gail Inch, Secretary
