JOB DESCRIPTION

TITLE: High School Principal

SUMMARY:

Provides strategic leadership and direction in the development and successful delivery of curriculum, instruction,as well asleadership activities ensuring compliance with Federal and State mandates and district standards. Provides strategic direction and supervises strategic implementation of standards, continuous improvement, and instructional practices that optimize student growth and achievement toward college and career readiness.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

Essential Job Duties

  • Leads the day-to-day activities of buildingreports; manages assigned administrators. Duties include hiring, training, counseling, evaluating staff performance, and when necessary disciplining and/or discharging staff.
  • Manages the delivery of the district’s school improvement activities to enable students to meet and/or exceed state and localstandards and to reduce the achievement gap between identified student populations and groups.
  • Assures effective implementation of the district teacher evaluation system (OTES). Systematically completes evaluations which include substantive feedback which results in measurable improvements in instruction and assessment.
  • Participates in preparation and implementation of the district’s Continuous Improvement Plan, School Improvement Plan, including leading the Building Leadership Team (BLT) and Teacher Based Teams (TBT). Reviews measurable goals by monitoring progress via use of student data.
  • Fosters a collaborative and supportive culture of teachers assisting each other to improve instruction, learning and student achievement.
  • Provides leadership, direction and oversight in the successful development, delivery and coordination of the district’s curriculum and instruction, targeting student college and career readiness and effective student performance against district, state and national benchmarks for performance.
  • Supports the activities of building leaders as they develop strategic programs for student transitions between middle and high school.
  • Works in coordination with the Director of Special Education to ensure students IEP’s and special education services are provided in the least restrictive educational environment.
  • Participates in parent conferences and student planning meetings as needed or required.
  • Develops and executes a master schedule which insures instruction of rigorous courses, appropriate staffing, and student services, as well as, otheractivities.
  • Coordinates and participates in interactions with otherprincipals across grade levels, as well as,ensures vertical alignment of curriculum to optimize student learning and performance, as well as, building and district effectiveness.
  • Supervises student testing programs and analyzes test results. Provides leadership for instructional modifications and interventions that enhance student learning and improve test performance.
  • Supervises and directs the evaluation (OPES)of assistant principals as assigned by the Superintendent.
  • Meets with district administrators and others to discuss curricular alignment, assists in the interpretation and analysis of student and program data and the resulting changes in instructional practices needed.
  • Participates, coordinates, and evaluates the planning and implementation of job-embedded staff professional development directly linked to the district and school’s continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Provides resources to support staff to think systematically about the change process in response to the needs of the school. Guides staff in the implementation of research-based instructional practices.
  • Participates with other district administrators in long-range strategic academic planning and decision-making; analyzes trends in data to create projections needed for decision-making.
  • Ensures compliance with regulatory requirements,board policy, and district standards; initiates corrective action as necessary.
  • Serves as a member of the administrative team thatcreates and executes the district’s vision, mission, and strategic plan.
  • Utilizes technology and other resources, as appropriate, to maximize communication with parents and community members regarding student learning and performance.
  • Maintains communication with parents, other departments, and external parties in the community and works cooperatively to resolve problems and exchange information. Ensures the respectful behavior of staff members towards students, parents and members of the community.
  • Maintains current knowledge of best practices, trends and new developments in educational programsin student testing, assessment, research and evaluation. Recommends and implements changes to methods and processes as necessary.
  • Provides leadership for the planning, development and implementation of the high school’s budget.
  • Uses a systematic plan of checks and balances when preparing and supervising the building’s budget.
  • Ensurethat facilities are operated effectively and efficiently andthat applicable health and safety standards are met.
  • Provides for adequate inventories of property and for the security and accounting of that property.
  • Develops long- and short-range plans, goals and objectives through a systemic process.
  • Anticipates problems and initiates solutions to problems.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Superintendent or designee.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

The preferred candidate for this position will have the capability and capacity to perform all assigned responsibilities satisfactorily. The requirements listedbelow are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required to successfully perform the duties of the principal of Lorain High School.   • Master’s degree or higher in Education, Public Administration or relevant discipline.
  • Seven (7) or more years of related teaching and administrative experience, including supervisory responsibilities and experience commensurate with the responsibilitiesdescribed.
  • Valid Ohio Department of Education Administrator certificate or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of district policies, accreditation and regulatory standards related to assigned functions, including strong knowledge of applicable state and federal laws.
  • Demonstrated supervisory skills to effectively manage the daily operations and administration of assigned function(s).
  • Strong communication skills (written and verbal)essential to effectively relate and productively work with all levels of district staff, students, parents and the general public.
  • Demonstrated ability to solve problems in a tactful, courteous and respectful manner.
  • Strong proposal writing skills.
  • Demonstrated technological skills required to maintain departmental records, documents and reports.
  • Demonstrated mathematical abilityessentialtothe development of the school’s annual budget and management of expenditures.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively serve as a leader and member of a team.

REPORTS TO: Superintendent or designee

SUPERVISES: Lorain High School staff and personnel as assigned

Physical & Environmental Responsibilities:

  1. Required to lift, climb, kneel, stoop, crawl, sit, walk, carry, push, pull, balance and reach.
  2. Ability to operate and use office technology hardware.

  6. Potential exposure to human blood, bodily fluids, tissue or potentially infectious materials.

  9. Potential exposure to all hazards associated with printing, copying, duplicating, video taping and television studio operations.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: As determined by ORC 3319.02;Salary based on experience and qualifications as set bythe Superintendent and approved by the Board of Education.

WORK CALENDAR: 12 month/260 work days. Leadership and supervision of student activities may be required beyond the regular 40-hour work week.
