INTRODUCTION:
This unit focuses on the concept of life as a journey it follows on from Y3 Easter Journey unit of work. It encourages pupils to deepen their understanding of and questioning about the Nativity narrative, helping them to reflect on and talk about questions and meanings for themselves and others. Pupils look at various sources: Bible verses, carols, paintings.
Vocabulary taught: Holy Land, sources, Holy Family.
Pupils need some prior knowledge of the following concepts: Journey, the Christmas narrative, Nativity, Magi, Mary, Joseph
AT1 LEARNING OBJECTIVES FOR THIS UNIT / AT2 LEARNING OBJECTIVES FOR THIS UNIT
To know the reasons why Mary and Joseph journeyed to Bethlehem and recall the events. / Ask questions and suggest answers about aspects of the Christmas narrative events leading to Jesus’ birth.
To understand and sequence the journey of the Magi to Bethlehem and the Holy Family’s ‘flight’ to Egypt under God’s protection. / Ask questions and suggest answers about aspects of the journeys of the Magi and the Holy Family’s ‘flight’ to Egypt under God’s protection.
ASSESSMENT: I Can statements for higher and lower achievers are included in the lesson plans for formative assessment.
The I Can statements below are based on the eight level scale of the Non Statutory National Framework for Religious Education.
Teachers are encouraged to refer to these at the end of each unit and make a summative assessment of the level pupils are working at. This information can be used by the class teacher for end of year reporting to parents and by the RE coordinator for monitoring the effectiveness of pupils’ learning in RE as part of the school’s ongoing self-evaluation.

LEVEL 3: I can make connections between one of the journeys in the Christmas story and the way Christians celebrate Christmas.

LEVEL 2: I can talk about some things in the Christmas story that make people ask questions.
LEVEL 3: I can pose questions and suggest my answers to aspects of the Nativity narrative which are difficult to understand.
LEVEL 4: I can retell parts of the story from my own point of view and make comparisons with someone who had another point of view.
